do you want to put it in your pocket so it looks like you have a large erection?

Dude, you might want to learn photography with less expensive equipment. Judging from the quality of those pics you might break something.

Hey, the other half of the peanut gallery is pitching in! :D. No offense taken. I'm quite sure I can take a better picture. And I'll learn photography with whatever damn equipment I want :D ! LOL

It appears the disgruntled photography experts are logged in tonight. I'm thinkin' that if anyone wants to critique pictures, ye needs to post one of yours. You know, I'll show you mine if you show me yours sort of thing ;).

Come on.... Bring it!

mmm...Canon L glass. You have some nice stuff. I'm getting into photography more now as well since I have more extra time as a HS senior. However, I'm using film camera (Canon Elan7). I'm shooting with a Canon 50mm f/1.8 and 28-105 f/3.5-4.5. Also got a 420EX flash.

I hope to get a Canon digital body in the future, but for now... :)

Sounds good :) (There are two pictures.)

You've got some really nice equipment there, though I'm not sure that's the kind of lens you "learn" photography with. :)

A lot of noticeable blue/purple fringing on the black and white stripes of the Zebra.

Nice kit Sketcher! I wish I had your equipment!

I know. My FinePix S5000 isn't really as good as I'd like it to be. I plan on investing in something better before I run off to college. I really wish I had enough money right now for a dSLR, but I don't. :(

Thanks, that 50 1/8 is a nice little lens at a great price. I use mine quite often. Your Elan7 is a sweet film body. I'm probably going to buy one of those this summer as my wife still wants to shoot film. The good part is we can share lenses. There is much that is shared between the Elan7 and 10D so there is a benefit in going that route.

And just what is "learning" photography? Is it the gear? Books? I suppose I could take pictures of the photog books I've studied. Or perhaps my own DOF Test.. Hmmm, now if a person wanted to 'learn' what it is like to shoot with a constant 2/8 aperture within a range of 70-200mm and compare the variance of an "Image Stabilized" picture with a non-Image Stabilized picture; how would one do so?

You had your S5000 on Full Auto for both pics so I won't critique your settings. Your camera's capability is on display there, not photographic skill (other than composition). I like the subject and comp though and I like water and reflections.. Thank you for sharing them.

You showed me yours, so here's a Zoo pic of mine: Stritch Was a bright day and didn't have a polarizer att. so he's just a little blown. Being that it was so bright though, it's on the mark for how he looked. The hard part (for me) was exposing for the shadow under the eye w/out completely washing out his head.

Yup better equipment would help here. I wonder how my F100 would cope in that situation?! But a compact is nice for non serious stuff and just for P&S stuff is quick. No big lenses to change or carry about. But dam a DSLR would be nice!

Thanks Koing,

Your F100 has a nice metering system. Great camera. What have you got for glass?

Dude, I'll admit, those snapshots leave something to be desired, but they served a purpose of which image quality was not a criteria. You might want to save your judgement for that which your razor sharp perception is better suited.

Now that I've gotten some sleep, and am not quite so entrenched in my own little world: ClueLis, I apologize for directing all of my disgruntledness toward you. There were others far more deserving! I just chose your post as a doorway to the stomping ground ;). Thanks for your compliment and lighthearted comment about learning photography.

FYI for everyone's benefit: The images on that site are pretty old (dates are listed). It's been quite a while since I've updated images there so though I feel I've improved in my photography, those pics give you an idea of where I started. Granted I started with a 10D and some good glass but an expensive Pro camera does not a photog create. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have good stuff ;).

An interesting misnomer which took me some time to come to terms with is that with a Pro camera you don't get the 'consumer' in-camera contrast/sharpening/saturation built in as with P&S. You often have to process those parameters on the comp because the Pro camera's take a 'digital negative' and leave it up to the photographer to massage the image. So, along with the usual questions about aperture, shutter speed, ISO and white balance the questions that accompany the Pro crowd also include references to Photoshop (which I'm horrible at) or other image editing software. The extra learning curve is a pain (for the non-Photoshop savvy crowd) but ultimately the control over the image is better providing the potential for a better final image. My images are processed w/as little PS as possible. I'd rather shoot than learn photo editing... but that time will come.

No prob. Just remember not to let people's lighthearted teasing get to you. Generally, the people her don't mean any harm, even if they make some sharp remarks.

Your ostritch picture isn't showing up for me :(

You'll have a blast with that bad boy. At f/2.8 with IS you'll get shots at 200mm handheld that you would never have thought possible before. That's a very useful lens for lots of things.

Hmm,

Not sure why the Ostrich didn't show up for you lirion. Here's the url to the pbase page it's on:

http://www.pbase.com/image/20880646/original

Anyone else have problems viewing the direct linked?: Stritch

RE: your PM, ah yes - EF 200mm f/1.8L USM. THAT's a sweet beast! Why would Canon discontinue that lens? From what I read, nothing else touches it; from any manufacturer and you got it for a good price IIRC.

I look forward to seeing your shots and hearing your stories if you shoot any kids sports this summer. I have three kids three and under and have been to quite a few local school games. The Mom's are feeding frenzied sharks carrying pocket camera's networking w/each other for the best shots. I'll use my kids as an excuse to stake out some sideline real estate and see if a little blood in the water will draw some attention. That's it, yeah, use the kids as leverage :D.
