think i can upgrade from a 8xx to a 9xx?

my friend has a xps 400 system with an 820 in it, and has been doing alot of reading and now wants a 9xx in it. granted he cannot overclock it. he said on dell's site the xps 400 can come with a 9xx series. I told him with the upgrading he keeps having me do he should have just had a system built, but he doesnt listen too well.

so anyways think it is safe to say a 9xx series will work in his system as long as he has the new bios?

he does realise that hte 8xx and 9xx series CPUs are pretty much the exact same thing right?

The 9xx series does run cooler, but won't neccesarily work with out a bios update. My 920@3.7ghz runs cooler than my 830 did at stock speeds.

hes not gonna overclock it, what does it matter how cool it runs?

Why waste the money? Spend it on a better GPU if he's looking for gaming performance.

about overclocking, I wonder if they have a fsb mod like they did with the 915 chipset... That would be awesome as dell usualy outprices self built p4 systems.

Well I tried doing the BSEL mod with my 920, and couldn't get it to work. I was doing it by soldering a wire though, so maybe it didn't sit correctly like that, and I may try again with conductive silver paint. I am sure that if I can run at 265mhz FSB 100% stable, it should be able to handle 266mhz FSB.

well he is wanting a processor upgrade anyways, he is looking at buyin gthe 940, the 9xx series has 2mb cache per core as opposed to the 1mb per core of the 8xx series. so anyone have any idea if it will work for him?

should work with bios upgrades.
