The worst is when you try to correct them on it... One guy who thought he was the bomb when it came to computers got so frustrated with me when I tried to explain to him "The hard drive is a specific component in a computer, not the whole computer." He went off on how Hard drive was the commonly accepted term for a computer and how I didn't know what I was talking about etc.

LOL what? Where was this? When I was working computer retail people would usually just laugh and say they were not computer literate. Or if they got frustrated they just wanted you to fix their problem and not correct them.

Everyone has heard "Hard Drive," "CPU," and "Modem." I attended classes with TEXTBOOKS that instructed people to refer to the computer as "the CPU."

That comes from the days of extremely early microcomputers where there was no fixed or removable storage within the main case. Back then, you have the CPU, the Monitor, and a Floppy Drive or two as components of the PC (e.g. the apple II which had a keyboard integrated into what they then often called "the CPU").

In the early 70s, the "CPU" could mean an entire logic board with individual ICs for things like registers and Adders and such. That terminology was essentially dead by the end of the 80's, although some out of touch teachers stuck with it until the mid 90's.

No. The were called "PC Computer Power Switching System Unit". Used one and placed it under my 21" CRT late '90s till I switched to LCD early '00s. At the time it was convenient to completely turn of power to your computer, printer, monitor with the flick of 1 switch.

Pretty much the standard varriations. What really gets me are all the descriptions I get when talking about the devices in their network - which always seems to end in a lengthy conversation about 'yes you do have modem even if it is high sped internet' and discussions/arguments that just because it shows excellent signal strength it doesn't necessarily mean you are connected to the Internet
