Refuses to realize that his son, who is the mechanical designer, couldn't design his way out of a wet fucking bag (at least until he causes us to shut down - which is getting closer by the day). There are others.....

Doesn't know how to do my job or his job. Only thing he can talk about is sports. Can't make a decision. Is terrified of women and if a client or co worker gets even a tiny bit confrontational he caves.

Mine...regardless of the situation (good / bad) always...somehow...manages to slide in the line...

"At the end of the day" followed by what he "thinks" should be done.

It gets to the point now that during meetings, I keep an active count of the number of times he can say it in a single meeting.

I kind of feel like he is on a trip from super troopers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXPeLctgvQI&hd=1

none at my current job. i don't really even have a "boss" just a tech lead. but we're more peers than him being my boss. then the project manager type of guy who kinda is in charge of the direction that we go with our software is really cool too.

I had a supervisor that got hired by his sister. She told our superintendent that she would take care of filling the position. No local posting of the position, no corporate posting of the position, only one applicant, she 'interviewed' him and then got him hired. He had zero background or knowledge in our line of work.

He had been involved in a major car wreck where he had a closed head injury. His long term memory was top notch but his short term was non-existent. He would assign me a special task (one outside of my normal duties) at the start of the day and an hour later he would want to know why I was doing what I was doing and he'd be upset that I was doing it. No recollection whatsoever of what he had told me to do an hour earlier. Fun times.

I quit the department and went back to a different group after trying for months to get him dealt with. Three weeks later they promoted him out of our group and to another facility. That's how a big corp like the one I worked for dealt with incompetence. Through promotion.

Current boss is a-OK, he takes a lot of heat for us (and dishes it out back 10 fold once he confirms we're buttoned up).

Former bosses:
- one ALWAYS talked about his whoremongering (and he is married). I still meet up with him from time to time for drinks and he keeps bring up how great it is to bang hookers.
- one kept sleeping with the female employees. He married one, divorced her, married another, had a kid with her, divorced her, hired her sister, paid the sister more than anyone else, allowed his ex-wife (my then co-worker) to do whatever the fuck she pleased.

this very accurately describes my current job as well

but about 7 years ago, I had a direct supervisor that was the biggest piece of shit I have ever known in my life.
1. pathological liar
2. He bragged about everything, from the money he made, to the shoes he bought, to the car he drove
3. took credit for other people's work (see reason #1)
4. the man would go to any length to get out of having to do work. His favorite was "I have a stomach ache," grab the keys and leave. Totally normal for this to happen 1-2 times a week, any time of day.
5. Was miserable at the few job duties he had. He was in charge of software purchasing, but never tracked anything he bought. No prices, serial #s, quotes, requestor info, nothing. So he failed every software audit because he had zero information or data to present.

My current boss is awesome. No complaints at all, except that he's 800 miles away and I rarely get to spend time with him.

My previous boss was a middle-aged female, whose programming skills were atrocious - like "never should have been hired for anything other than stocking the vending machines" atrocious. Any perceived disagreement brought her to tears. Any perceived slight about her programming skills brought her to tears. Any perceived change in the weather brought her to tears.

I once was reviewing code with her, and used the word "weird" to describe a section which she had written - although I didn't know that at the time. Tears, and later a lecture about respecting my coworkers. Good grief those were bad days. I literally nearly left the IT field because I hated working for her so much.

Since then, our new corporate overlords have demoted her from manager to programmer. Nowadays she spends most of her time going from office to office trying to milk sympathy for how badly she thinks the new owners have screwed her.

One of my worst bosses would tell me to go address an issue, I would and everyone would be happy, except him. He wanted me to do it a different way but would never tell me until after. I even started asking and he said as long as it got done right, he didn't care. but he did. Every decision I made, right or wrong, we would sit down and talk about what we could have done different.

I don't mind stop retrospectives, but having to question every decision I made was exhausting.

Get this... my boss is a full blown anarchist. Thinks we would be fine without ANY government at all. He thinks society would build roads and shit without government. Can you believe how fucking stupid this guy is?

Sounds like a republican. My sympathies.

While the micromanagers are pretty bad, there's nothing worse than a lame duck supervisor. One guy I had was an absolute weenie. Getting him to do anything was like pulling teeth. Lack of communication was probably the biggest problem. We needed a channel open between us and the technical team to do out jobs effectively. He was supposed to be the intermediary. We eventually got fed up of not hearing anything, so we had to organize impromptu meetings with them ourselves. If we had a grievance, he liked to play divide and conquer to avoid confronting the issue. We also had several critical pieces of equipment he was supposed to get fixed, but never did. I told him repeatedly how to deal with the government (who we had a contract with), but he'd always take the weenie route. So nothing ever got done.

He was a nice guy and all but clearly wasn't cut out for management. He got overwhelmed too easily. I think he saw this himself, and eventually took a more technical role.

Every morning my boss walks the floor and in rapid succession he says "good morning, good morning, good morning" to each person. I don't think he realizes how fake it looks and sounds from the employee perspective.

Whats yours?

See, as a boss, this is why I don't do the Good Morning thing. In fact, what's so good about morning anyway?

I was fully expecting "...hired her sister, married her..."

Damn man, sorry to hear that! In no way am I saying my complaint is in any way of the egregious sort. Certainly your situation is worse. Hopefully you're making a good comeback.

Thanks for the good wishes! I was in funk yesterday and posted a few sarcastic comments on several threads. My intent on the reply above was more to say smell the roses, because things could be a lot worse.

It took me almost a year to find another job. I finally landed one at a prestigious university. I knew that I wasn't a good fit for the culture there, but 11 months unemployed gives you a new perspective. I stuck it out for 5 years, understood that I didn't want to work there anymore, then decided to retire early.

I worked for that boss I mentioned for over 4 years. When she first arrived she cleaned house, getting rid of men she deemed a threat. All they did was to tell her how things need to be changed. Having seen one demoted and another told to find another job, my first interview with her was to tell her that I'd help out in anyway I can. That worked and eventually I got promoted to a better job no one else wanted. I won by no one else showing up. Unfortunately the new company didn't value that work, and I took a more routine job at the same pay working for the same boss. But it took just one misstep in all that time for her to go in her defensive mode.

I found out after I left the company that her carpal tunnel problem was actually MS. After I landed the job, I called her to let her know. It was short but pleasant conversation. Later I heard she was confined to a wheelchair, and after few years she passed away. Even with what I went through, I never wished her ill will. Certainly not what she eventually went through.
