Necro threads are pretty rare as it is, and isn't a big deal.
I agree, and starting a new thread about a similar issue just because the original thread is old does seem daft.

But you know what it's like here. Give necros the green light and some asshat will bump a load of random threads then whinge incessantly if they get infracted over it.

Make MoonBeam our philosopher king. He does zero moderation and has no official power; but everyone agrees to follow his proclamations (such as they are) as far as one feels (s)he can properly interpret them.

Also I would like to be able to tip some sort of official anandtech crypto currency.

Agree, the person is something special in here and should be recognised.

Sarcasm I hope.

And yes, this thread is throwing necro threads way out of proportion. They seem to be handled fine in the current manner (that is, many are locked, but as of late the mods are giving them more thought), and they really aren't occurring that often.

Other way around I think; some in this thread are acting as if requests to allow relevant necroposts are the same as requesting to remove all necropost rules altogether, and that is not what is being requested.

I would like to see more dramatic "Things You Want Changed" threads, wherein banned members come in posting screenshots of bad deeds and slinging accusations.

This is a terrible idea. I am on these forums almost every day trying to help people. Many others do the same. Why would we want to pay for doing something that, in most other circumstances, we would be the ones getting paid?

You would clear a lot of the rif-raf, but you would also be killing a lot of what makes these forums as good as they are.
People of goodwill can disagree.

I really, really like this idea, down to the granular level of leaving P&N and L&R out of what would look like the OT of old that so many of us miss.
+1

Thanks for the changing the downtime.

Necro posts have never really seemed that large of an issue, there are some truly classic old ones.

I still like most things as they are, emoticons would be nice but seems a pretty minor issue.

Just would hate to see things change too radically too fast, but it does not seem to be the intent.

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet but it would be nice to have the "thanks" button on each post.

This would probably stop posts like "thanks for posting that" kind of stuff.

Tons of VBulletin forums use these to allow members to "thank" someone for posting a statement or link or what ever without actually needing to post a thanks.

Don't lock necros at all. If you don't like them, don't read them. If people bumps necros just to bump necros, deal with the person.

Threads with a newest comments older than 5 years should be removed from google search, if that's possible. It's always a newby who arrived here from a search engine result who revives those threads.

Done.

This request has been approved and is being processed. Due to the holidays, we expect the change will take place within a matter of weeks. Our objective will be the complete elimination of the downtime period, rather than a rescheduling. You may see another downtime or two before we are able to enact this change, but it is approved and in process.

Much appreciate everyone's feedback so far - please keep them coming. 🙂

Thanks, jpishgar, for inaugurating your tenure with a universally acclaimed change for the better!

Honestly, I thought the downtime was a subtle hint for some ppl to get a life, but whatever, lol.

It's possible that this has already been discussed in this thread and I don't know it because I don't know the terminology for forum tech, but what about upgrading the forum to allow people to get replies when they are directly quoted so that there is no need to subscribe to a thread that you replied to?

If you post/reply in a thread, you are automatically subscribed. Are you talking about removing the automatic functionality of that?

Hm, that never happens for me. Must mean that there is an option for it that's been turned off; maybe I did it years ago? If so, then that would be an enhancement I suppose - someone could turn off the the automatic subscription but they would always get an email if directly replied to.

Edit: I found the option in the control panel, maybe I did turn it off years ago. I'd turn it on but then a single P&N post would spam me for months to come unless I changed it...
