Subtitled movies.

I HATE dubbed movies. I love good movies, I don't give a shit what language the sound is in, I am competent enough in my ability to read that subtitles do not take anything away for me.

I'm not a fan. Part of language is the inflection put on certain words and the tone in which they're said. Unless you're familiar with the dialect, it's difficult to detect subtle sarcasm, humor, fear, etc... It's not impossible as some of them have facial expressions to go with them, but if you're busy reading words you sometimes miss these facial clues. Sometimes it doesn't matter, but a lot of times it does. I rarely connect with foreign movies because of this so I don't find many of them very good.

That is part of the language, But it's a hell of a lot better than audio dubbed movies.
Anyhow, you can pick up on the body language, and if you've seen enough movies from one certain culture or language, you can pick up a lot more than if it's your first time watching a subtitled film.... Anyhow, I've probably watched 500+ subtitled movies, so perhaps I'm just used to it...

It's kinda like when you're driving, you always look out the front windshield but you also keep a bit of your vision directed towards the rear view mirror...

You can see what's in front of you while also noticing whats behind you at the same time without diverting your focus.... Same thing for me with movies and subtitles.

sarcasm is easily conveyed if the translation is good. The only problem I see is with the inflection--sometimes you can't tell if the actor is over-acting or being very natural within the culture, if you have no experience with the language and native speakers.

I love foreign language movies, mainly because so very many of them easily outclass much of what Hollywood is willing to produce.
