Things to see on Maui?

I'm going to Maui!
The boss is insisting that I attend a conference there the second week of September. Well, after some arm twisting, I agreed :p

So what's there to see & do? The conference runs all week ... it's in Wailea. So I'll likely only have evening, and maybe some afternoons free during the week. But I'll have roughly 2 days available on both ends of the week. So I need some full day things, and some afternoon kind of stuff.
Suggestions?

Awesome!

Don't do the Road to Hana... it is kind of boring... but the views are awesome if you are into photography.

Go snorkelling or kayaking (my 2 favorite things I did there). We went snorkelling on Lanai.

Don't tell people not to do something because you didn't like it. I would much rather drive the road to Hana than Kayak or snorkel. We all have preferences.

The Road to Hana is quite lame and you have to watch out for the locals there to. The only reason to do it would be to see the pools which are alright. But since you are in Wailea it wouldn't be that long of a drive. I usually stay on the west side of the island. Also some of the best snorkeling is at just past mile marker 14 on Route 30.

My wife and I spent two weeks in Kauai for our honeymoon in early June. It was unbelievable, and we can't wait to go back someday. Even with two weeks on such a small island, there was much left unseen. Ke'e Beach is the best. Be sure to swim with the sea turtles there right before sunset, just beyond the reef. The Hanalei part of the island is the nicest.

Thanks Guys,
Looks like I'll get there mid-day on the 11th, and leave late on Sunday the 19th. So I'll have 3.5 days strictly for myself + evening, etc. during the week. And maybe a side trip to the observatories on Mauna Kea!

The locals are very against us haole. As the quote from 50 First Dates goes, "Damn you Haole! You make my sister work in your hotels!"

I thought the road to Hana was nice, and all the locals I met were way more pleasant and courtous than most mainlanders I have met. However, if scenery isn't your thing I can understand why you would think the road to Hana is boring.

The road to Hana is very narrow at times and very windy but the locals drive on it like it was a race track. They also get rather pissed if you hold them up.
