Things to do in San Francisco ?

Going to be in San Fran for a few days for a conference.

What's there to do & see, recommendations??

recommendations...

touristy stuff-
Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, take a cable car for fun, Lombard street, Chinatown (the fooooood), Union Square/Downtown shopping, Coit Tower, Sony Metreon...

Nightlife- 18+ clubs are pretty....crowded and dirty...21+ clubs are decent-
glas kat, soundfactory...just look up clubs online...

HOUSE OF PRIME RIB on van ness...must be experienced....

Check out the Golden Gate Bridge and Ghiradelli Square and the Cannery, adjacent to Ghiradelli Square. Avoid the rest of Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, tourist traps.

Check out Golden Gate Park, at least a drive. The Strybing Arboretum (near the 9th Avenue entrance) is a terrific walk in the park, admission is free.

The Legion of Honor museum is beautiful, it's up in the northwest corner of SF, in Lincoln Park. Lots of folks take wedding pictures there, good view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

As for cool neighborhoods for restaurants and nightlife, I recommend Union Street (Cow Hollow), Chestnut Street (the Marina), and North Beach (Columbus Street and the Washington Park area).

Not really any beaches to hit in San Francisco this time of year. Unless you enjoy freezing your ass off.

Whatever you do, avoid drivng in SF, and you will keep your enjoyment factor up. The minute you have to drive a car and find a parking spot in that city, you will hate it forever. I avoid SF unless someone else drives, or I take BART.

..agreed that pier39 is a tourist trap, but if it's your first time and you have an hour or two, it's still interesting..

second the Legion of Honor Museum...it's especially beautiful at night, even though it's not open.
If you're into art, SF MOMA (museum of modern art) is a good way to spend an afternoon...

if you like baseball at all and you're here on a game day, definitely try to get tickets...pac bell park is great, and Bonds is on pace for 324 this season ...

That's true, with respect to Pier 39, it's still fun to look at if you've got plenty of time.

A big second on PacBell Park, it's beautiful. Not a bad seat in the house, even the cheap seats. Bleacher tickets are the best bargain. Garlic fries + beer + sunny day at PacBell Park = Awesome.

Definately check out Fisherman's Wharf, and just around the Marina/North Beach area. There are some great views of the city and the golden gate bridge from there. Plus, Nob hill is always fun as well, great restuarants, and finally, if you want to shop, check the embarcadero out and union square.

i agree with skc.. definately go to house of prime rib.. totally awesome

you can try out the touristy places if you like that sorta thing.. you should try a cable car ride.. i've been born and raised in sf and never taken one.. i will one of these days..

legion of honor has an amazing view if you've got a chicky to bring around...

north beach has some great italian food.. chinatown has some great chinese food.. uhh...

i'll third on the giants game.. pac bell park is amazing.. the food will clean out your wallets though.. but i love giants games

What do you do at Treasure Island? I took a drive around there a few weeks ago and it's just a bunch of naval housing turned into apartments. They don't even have so much as a convenience store as far as I can tell.

Interesting yes, but probably not to visitors.

Lots of things to do. Skip the tourist stuff, it's all the same eveery city you go to. Spend time on the waterfront (either the embarcadero or the marina). check out the castro (gay district), check out pacific heights (super, super rich neighborhood on a steep hill with great views), see the haight (where the summer of love began), Golden gate park on sundays is the best because they close it to cars. there are lots of theater and musical performances all of the time.
The arboretum is nice. eat good food. places that look "trendy" tend to have the best food. House of Prime Rib is a S.F. instituion but it isn't very good. The meat is decent, it is an experience, but the side dishes straight up suck. Go to the San Francisco Art Institute and eat in their cafeteria. The food is great and it has an excellent view!
