Not necessarily in this order, but preferred:

1: Drink heavily
2: smoke meth (or possibly inhale some glue)
3: stagger down to nearby highway biker bar
4: initiate fight with bartender; justify assault with gibberish-filled nonsense
5: trouser-less, flee bar on foot
6: lead state troopers through dense and swampy foot chase
7: spend the night in the pokey, claim your ex, your parents, god, or possibly aliens are to blame
8: have your constabulatory report appear on Fark.

Welcome to Florida!

Suggestions:
1. Drive the entire length of Everglades Park and stop at most of the points along the route, will take up at least half a day.

2. Drive all the way to Key West and make stops along the way, could easily take a whole day or even more.

3. Visit http://www.bahiahondapark.com/ Bahia Honda state Park in the Keys, voted one of the best beaches in the country. Suppose to be amazingly beautiful.

4. Spend several days in the keys, there is a lot to see and do.

5. Go to Dry Tortugas National Park, read up on it before hand because you might need to make reservations. You have to take their boat to and from the island.

6. Head over to the Naples area. Marco Island, Sanibel Island and Captiva are all suppose to be very nice.

7. South Beach, either day or night or both.

If you do it right you'll fly through 2 weeks in no time, plenty of things to do and see.

There is absolutely NOTHING to do in Florida. NO tourist activities, no historical sites, no new or unusual scenery, no unique parks...NOTHING.

If you go, do not leave your hotel room or you will either die of boredom...or get mugged and/or killed by either a cuban...or elderly jewish person...

Everyone knows this...

Jeezus-fucking-christ...you have to come here and ask what to do in Florida...one of the most heavily advertised tourist states in the contiguous USA?

A few things I've kinda put on the list so far:
*Cruise - probably looking at a short 4 day cruise. Will have to see what's available that suits my schedule. If nothing fits my schedule, I'll have an extra 4 days to try kill.
*Snorkeling. Not sure where are the best locations but I've read that Key Largo is fairly good. Any other suggestions? I want to play around with my underwater housing for my camera.
*Might learn to scuba dive. Not sure if I want to pick a vacation to learn it/get certified but considering it.
*Drive along the Keys to Key West.
*Cape Canaveral? I want to go check out where they launch space shuttles but wondering if it's worth going there or not?

I'm looking to stay in the Miami area and anything with 1-2 hours drive from there. I may make an exception if there's something awesome to see but it's gotta be pretty damn good.

Has anyone been to/lives in Florida and can offer suggestions on good things to do there?

I lived there for a number of yrs, but it was quite a while ago (some info may be out-of-date).

Snorkeling? Try John Pennekamp State park (underwater/coral reef state park) http://www.pennekamppark.com/

You know how to sail etc? Boats, windsurfers etc can be rented at the marina near Cocoanut Grove (you'd be sailing ect in Biscayne Bay from this location)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coconut_Grove,_Miami,_Florida

Often there were free concerts at Kennedy park (Coconut Grove) which is on the water by the marina etc.

Likewise, can go over the Rickenbacker causeway to Key Biscayne (near Coconut grove) and head to the beach, windsurfers, Hobie Cats etc for rent. (You'd be sailing in the Atlantic from this location.)

Yeah, go to the Everglades and take an airboat ride. Can also visit the Seminole Indian reservation.

Go visit Little Havana and eat some Cuban food (8th street etc or calle ocho)

Fish on charter boats etc.

Google for their chamber of commerce and/or office of travel and tourism for more ideas (might be able to see if there's any boat races, used to be an arena for that on Key Biscayne).

I was simply asking for suggestions outside of what I had thought up. I had a short list but a little insight from residents and previous visitors is always helpful for someone who has never been there before. I've got limited time and limited budget - what's wrong with asking for input from people who know Florida better than I do? I know this is OT and people are free to say what they want but sheesh...what's with the attitude?

For everyone else that had constructive suggestions, thanks! I got a pretty decent shortlist right now of places I want to go. I just have to figure out the cruise portion to see whether I can line up something at a decent price.

Since there isn't really a travel forum here, I thought OT would be a good place to get some suggestions since I'm sure we've got some folks from Florida here...

It's time for my annual "use it or lose it" vacation (where if I don't use my vacation days by the end of the year, I'll lose them) so it's time for me to plan something.

This year, I've decided to be somewhat of a snowbird and vacation in Florida. Time frame is pretty much starting at the end of next week up until the week of Christmas.

I'm looking to see if anyone has been and has some recommendations on things to see do.

Right now, I've narrowed it down to Miami and Florida Keys as places to go. I'll probably be flying into either Fort Lauderdale (because I have a free flight with Frontier Airlines) or Miami (if I manage to round up some people to go with me at the last minute)

A few things I've kinda put on the list so far:
*Cruise - probably looking at a short 4 day cruise. Will have to see what's available that suits my schedule. If nothing fits my schedule, I'll have an extra 4 days to try kill.

Has anyone been to/lives in Florida and can offer suggestions on good things to do there?

My only experience in Florida was in Gainsville and a little bit of Orlando but I probably don't want to make the trek up to Orlando unless I'm REALLY bored. I'm looking for mostly outdoors type activities but I just want to put together a broad list and start narrowing down places depending on how everything pans out.

Other than that I'll need to research it some more but some suggestions would be welcomed!

the broadwalk at hollywood beach was hella fun, course all we wanted to do was plant our asses in the sand and do nothing for a week.

although, 2 years ago we went to nasa for a shuttle launch. spent half the week just doing shiz there. its worth it.
