was in a conversation and came up with some items that there's no major benefit of buying brand new.

1. cars
2. cd's/dvd's
3. tools such as wrenches, power tools
4. books
5. sports equipment; baseball gloves to elliptical trainers, etc.

what else?

EDIT:
baby clothes/shoes
videogames
computer hardware
musical instruments

Good list so far, but you missed games. I get all my gamecube and GBA games used and never have problems. Most of them even come with a manual, not that I read them anymore. I used to read manuals when my brother and I shared a console, since we would have to take turns playing/reading. Even in the old days once you clean off the used NES cartridge it's as good as new.

I got my 2nd wireless wavebird used as well from ebgames, and it came with a rechargeable battery pack that way. YMMV. (Purchased new it's batteries not included.)

Used Baby shoes are about as good as new ones once properly cleaned (they don't exactly put a lot of miles on them before they outgrow them.)

Except games which have CD keys which then get linked to accounts. I wouldn't want to buy UT2004 second hand, because someone else may still be using the CD key. Half Life 2 and the like are also not advisable to buy second hand.

I buy move DVDs and books new, particularly books. I like all my books in pristine condition. Even books I've had for years and read a dozen times still look almost new.

If you've got the cash, i have no problem with people buying new cars, or indeed basically anything else on that list ;)

Computer systems and parts. I bought a first-generation MacBook, oh man...Firewire port shutdown the computer any time I plugged a device in, had the random shutdown problem, had heat issues, all kinds of things. The repair charge was over $1,000, which was luckily covered under warranty. Never again...second or third or later generation stuff for me from now on.

luggage
furniture
dishes
coloring books (they're just kids, screw em)

With portable power tools you are probably a lot better off buying new. Stationary power tools, I agree should be bought used.

The only things that you should never buy brand new are newly revised cars, consoles and microsoft operating systems. And that doesn't mean you should buy them used. But you should wait for them to work the bugs out.

Guitars and Amps - Musical equipment in general.

It's not the most financially responsible purchase, but there's nothing like buying a new car.
