Things that should be taught in school, but are not.

What are some important concepts that should be part of any school curriculum, but which are frequently ignored in the American school system?

Schools really need to find a way to whack out the entitlement state of today's youth. Maybe require them to participate in some social services like homeless shelter or foster care, or even send them to a foreign country so that they would truly appreciate what they get in America.

Religion.

Not any specific religion, just a class that covers the origins, beliefs, and ideologies of many world religions: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc.

How to think for yourself.

Too many tests I have seen revolve around multiple guessing or matching or T/F. Instead make them write short essay answers. Too many student get to College, and are unable to write even a simple sentence. Being able to write down and communicate what you know is a key skill in the real world.

I had one instructor at a university who filled every test he gave with essay questions.

Example:
Name the 10 components of the Accounting system and how they work together.

So how to write a simple essay, as an opinion, or to explain your point of view is somewhat lacking. In my first english class we had to do composition and we often were required to construct an essay, proof it and print it out and hand it in before the end of class (20 min). It is a learned skill and I had not been to school in 20 years at the time I took the class.

Repeating some for emphasis

Personal finance
Using a library
How to survive eight hours without any electronics
Business writing (Y U NO RITE 2 GD?)
How to work with other people
And also, the world doesn't owe you a darn thing

I guess I shouldn't be surprised these don't get taught, seeing as how much time is spent on diversity classes, self-actualization, and remedial everything. Hardly time to learn anything new when you have to keep teaching the same things over again year after year.

Learn how to read and write, and master basic math, then you can have all the time you want for the fluff subjects.
