The matrix movies. Movies in general, actually, would be different if we didn't experience the cut and paste/remix culture that is hip hop. Rock music would be very different, most great indie rock bands have some sort of DJ element or feature production work that is very much inspired by hip hop. Many, many, many genres of music extend from hip hop (and hip hop from jazz) - electro-clash, goth (with their very heavy synth use), drum and bass, jungle, industrial... I could go on and on. Hip hop fashion often gets filtered down into the mainstream and much of the hipper, edgier fashion that's selling like hot cakes to people with far more money than you ATOT readers (white people, fashionistas, not the ghetto people you fear) on Madison Ave. would not exist. So we'd still be wearing Polo shIrts and jordache jeans.. Hmm.. What else.. We'd have no one to bitter toward when a black guy picks up the girl you like in a bar because their confidence makes them more appealing than your thinly veiled insecurities...

I find it a good mix of edgy and classy. I prefer urban outfitters but don't confuse the clothing of poor kids from the ghetto with urban wear/hip hop inspired fashion.

gotta love double standards. And way to take a SMALL portion and use it for an example of what a whole culture is based on. Which, by the way is way off because the foundation of rap was to keep kids from fighting in the streets and give them something constructive to do. Regardless of what SOME of it has became today.

If i had a teenager I'd much rather they listen to rap and wear pants that hang off their ass than to be an Emo who cuts themselves and listens to Jesus Mary Chain, but hay that's just me.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I really don't think Johnny Cash advocated killing police and slapping "b!tches" as a way to get through life. He may have sung about it, but for all his influence there were very few, if any people, who did what he sang about.

No matter what good hip hop may have done, it has been superseded by the legacy of gangster rap starting in the 90s. People will always remember the violence, hatred, arrogance, and complete disregard for any/everything that involves social structure in our society. There is nothing that can be done about this...So to those of you defending hip hop: You will never change the public face of what hip hop has become. To those of you attacking hip hop: Let it go, and try to explain to your children to destructive nature of "thug life" so they can grow to be something, instead of just another dead "thug".

I hate people who say that they hate entire genres of music. When I was young I'd say I hated country and rap but what about Johnny Cash and Public Enemy? I was a dorky brown kid who jerked off to... Nevermind. Expand your mind, or be bitter, uncultured white trash. I went to a hip hop show (DJ Spooky) - 99% of the audience were upper class, well dressed, middle-aged white people. It was in a former opera house - they appreciated the hip hop music like Classical music because they understand the social and musical implications of the music. Because these people were educated and liked experiencing new things.. And they enjoyed the hell out of it. it was the best show I've experienced, and I sat down to a 70 year old woman wearing an evening gown and pearls.

I don't recall the message from Johnny Cash being '"fvck the law!" it's evil bad and wrong'. If anything it was look at the misery and ruin that will result from living life in that manner. "Folsom Prison Blues" did not glorify prison, it was the lament of someone stuck in prison reflecting on what brought them to that place and time and what life would be like as a free man.

IMO, since this whole thread is build around people's opinions...

Rock, real rock, is built & based around the blues not hip-hop. Hip-hop at one time may have had its genesis in blues but it has long since abandoned that foundation. The e-tard scene you can keep (jungle, drum & bass, etc...)

Actually, I still wear golf shirts because they work well with my khakis in my office. No, we wouldn't still be wearing Jordache jeans...denims have been around much longer than hip-hop.
