My sister-in-law visited for the long weekend. She's 24, lives at home, and is pretty spoiled, but I don't really care since it doesn't impact my life. While we were out and about she started talking about Christmas gifts. She was telling us what she wanted and my wife shut her up - "send us an email in November, it's too early to think about Christmas!"

I shrugged it off until a few hours later, at brunch. Again, she starts going off about what gift cards she wants and, frustrated, I said "What are you? 5? I haven't asked for Christmas gifts since I was 13 [which is when I started working and paying for my own shit]."

It felt realllly good, but she didn't talk to me for the rest of the trip and our usual facebook banter has stopped.

What's the worst thing you've said in similar situations?

Nope, never said that. But considering ATOT represents my expectations of real life social interactions and I had said that, the expected response would have been "PICS?"

That wasn't the intention. A part of me wants to slap her into shape, because no one has the guts to say anything to her and I betcha I gotta deal with her in 20 years, when her parents are gone and she needs a place to stay or help with something or the other..

But you're also right, it was partly none of my business.. Heck, I was pissed that we had to wine and dine her when money's already tight, especially since it wasn't any special occasion.
 
what you said wasn't that bad but you should've said it in a more joking manner
otherwise, I would have just not said anything since it doesn't impact my life too much. Not like I'd see her everyday

ditto. The most annoying part is that I would prefer that we don't exchange gifts except for giving presents to the kids. The women won't do that because they "love watching other people open gifts" (lol, yeah right).
 
Not me, but my wife. We were visiting my grandparents for the first time and we were trying to teach my wife to play Pinochle. My grandma kept saying, this is trump, thats trump, he played that because its trump. My wife busts out with this one, "Well, I don't even know what the hell trump is!@!" I was horrified to say the least.

It wasn't about what we wanted, but what she wanted. I only got mad because she was so direct about it - "get me gift cards from store x and y" after my wife already told her we weren't ready to talk X-mas at all.

WTF, a 24 year old asking for xmas gift from her sister and her husband? I would get her nothing at all or coal or gift cards with only $1 on them 😉
And it's only farking September... Ugh.. I'd approve slapping her 🙂
 
had the inlaws huck some 60 lb sacks of cement for me. that ended their unanounced drive by drop in's. now they call to find out what I'm doing.

Get this - my wife tried to bury the hatchet by emailing her side of the family, suggesting that we spend time together instead of exchange gifts (a weekend trip or something).

Her sister replied - "i'm not going to say anything since you told me to wait until November to talk about xmas"

She sounds like a brat. I imagine most guys have figured her out and that's why she's living at home mooching off the parents instead of living with a boyfriend.

I'm sure some 50 year old guy would like to be her sugar daddy though.
