Things not covered by your Verizon Asurion Insurance

Upgrading my two accounts to a droid most likely and wanted to read about the insurance. I usually don't get it, but learned my lesson after one phone was stolen and another just crapped out and ended up spending about $500 in one year for phones. I know I'm going to get thoughts and opinions on cell phone insurance and I don't mind.

Got a kick out of these listed events not covered:

b. Nuclear Hazard

Nuclear reaction or radiation, or radioactive contamination, however caused. If physical loss or damage by fire ensues, we will pay only for such ensuing loss or damage.

c. War

(1) War, including undeclared or civil war;
(2) Warlike action by a military force; or
(3) Insurrection, rebellion, revolution, usurped power or action taken by governmental authority in hindering or defending against any of these. Such loss or damage is excluded regardless of any other cause or event that contributes concurrently or in any sequence to the loss or damage.

I also got a kick out of this part too:

6. Statement Under Oath
As often as may be reasonably required, submit to questioning under oath about any matter relating to this insurance or claim. In such event, the answers must be signed.

So...I guess I can't get a free replacement if I use it as an IED...

BTW, how much was the insurance?

It seems a little much considering there is still a deductible, but that's fine if it's worth it to you. Smart phones are quite expensive to replace. Square trade's 16 GB iphone warranty is $120, but that's just damage and not lost/stolen.

True. Not to mention I can already find Droids on craigslist for ~$200...

Not a worthwhile investment IMO.
Also for a little while Newegg was selling the things dirt cheap too.

I'm still paying for insurance. its nothing compared to the cost of voice and data. The deductable pisses me off, but since Verizon is the only service in my area worth a damn, AND, I would only ever get an Android phone with them, its acceptable.

Asurion can kiss my ass. I paid the extra $5 a month for a year and half and when it was time to file a claim they hit me with a $54 deductible to replace my old Samsung phone.

18x$5+$54= $164.

Asurion is not worth it unless you break phones a lot.

Let's see- head crab damage after an accidental resonance cascade is not mentioned, so it must be covered. Good to know.

Hmm, a new Droid will cost you 500-600 dollars, so 8/month isn't too bad. 90 dollar deductible is irritating, but better than shelling out full price for a replacement.

i agree. something about having to "find" a replacement if mine broke or is lost is a pain. and ive been burned on craigslist in the past with phones that had something wrong with them that i didnt notice till a month later. like the z key not working or some other less used key

8 * 24 = 192

192 + 89 = 281

$281 ÷ $500 = 56.2%

You're much better off just replacing it if it stolen/damaged than paying 56% of the full retail price.

if you didnt have the ins youd pay full price. wouldlnt paying 56% of that be better than 100% of it? its a wash if you can find a phone for under $280 online/ used, and a bummer if they drop under that but as it is, the tradeoff for a full price phone is pretty good. i have insurance on my omnia (probably need to chack pricing to see if its still worth it tho) but ive gotten 3 so far. i work in water/ wastewater, ive lost phones due to misfortune in plants that no one in their right mind would try to salvage a phone out of. its worth it to me, since coming up with 50 bucks "right now" is much easier than dishing out a few hundred.

In your situation it makes sense to get the insurance because you are much more likely to damage your phone. Of course some insurance services would deny your claims because they don't cover water damage.

For your average person, though, it makes more sense just to forego the insurance and then buy a new phone, because most phones get cheaper over time. So after a year, the retail price will be a lot closer to the total insurance rates paid & the deductible.

That standard for most contracts. It's the force majeure clause.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Force_majeure

Force Majeure (French for "superior force"), also known as cas fortuit (French) or casus fortuitus (Latin)[1], is a common clause in contracts which essentially frees both parties from liability or obligation when an extraordinary event or circumstance beyond the control of the parties, such as a war, strike, riot, crime, or an event described by the legal term "act of God" (e.g., flooding, earthquake, volcanic eruption), prevents one or both parties from fulfilling their obligations under the contract. However, force majeure is not intended to excuse negligence or other malfeasance of a party, as where non-performance is caused by the usual and natural consequences of external forces (e.g., predicted rain stops an outdoor event), or where the intervening circumstances are specifically contemplated.

I figure insurance is worth it for the first 6 months or so. By then, phone prices come down enough were it becomes pointless.

Depends on the phone.

I just made my 3rd claim on the Blackberry Storm in 6 weeks. 1st one was my SO's line, it got champagne spilled on it.

Then I lost mine, got a new one from Aursion on Friday, dropped it in the toilet when I was wasted on Sunday.

Got a new one yesterday from Asurion.

$50 deductable each time. Otherwise, when you arent eligible for an upgrade, each one would have cost ~$500.

Someone with better mathz skills than myself should figure the break-even point, where depreciation and expected market value end up making the phone cost less than what you put out in monthly fees and the deductible.

I'm already at that point on my car, but since its still bank owned.... Gotta cover in full.

asurion has covered both my phone as well as my daughters phone for water damage. not sure if thats special or not, insurance is insurance. warranty isnt covered for water damage, but the insurance covered it. if i ever dropped it into a vat of green stuff at palo verde*, id tell them it got stolen rather than nuclear melted.

* ive never seen any vats of green stuff at palo verde, that was just an example

for anyone that works law enforcement my phone takes a beating. i recently bought a body glove cover for my curve and my phone has lasted for a whole YEAR! lol prior to that id drop the stupid thing on cement or it would get wet in the rain and a week late just not turn on.

plus with verizon, if you dont sign up for insurance within i think its 10 days from the purchase of your new phone, you cant get insurance.
