Things I should buy to use in college?

I bought a flash drive after being at school for a few months. I also tried a PDA, but ended up trading that with my parents for other things that were more useful. I was given a graduation "present" so I could upgrade my computer; unless your computer is totally ancient, I'd bring what you've got and wait it out at least a semester to see what you really need (while I enjoy my nice computer now, I have a few regrets about buying last summer instead of waiting it out with my then-current system to discover what would be better suited for what I need). On a related note, I'd recommend against a TV tuner if you are in a hard major and you don't have the world's best self-control. Regardless of my comments about waiting to upgrade above, by all means if you're able to, purchase an LCD if you currently have a CRT; space is at a premium in dorm rooms, and you don't want to have to carry a CRT anywhere (especially on stairs).

I'll be at Northwestern University in the fall. I have a nice winter jacket ready 🙂

Hey, I'll be in the area since I'm going to UChicago.

I have a Northface Denali shell/fleece combo jacket FYI 🙂
Congrats on getting into a great school.

A good memory stick, they have replaced floppies (most computers at colleges are newer, and so won't have a floppy, though some may have ZIP).
Wait until after you get there for a semester to buy a laptop. Your perception of what you need may change.
A TV tuner card is only useful if you don't have a roommate. A roommate will almost certainly not want to use a computer as a TV and so there will be one in your room.

Even if I have a roomate/TV, what attracted to me to a tuner card would be the ability to record shows so as to not waste time on things like LOST during the week and then enjoy them on the weekend.

Ok, fair enough.

That is just me speculating; you could be right 🙂

small TV. computer, bookshelf stereo. mini fridge. carpet remnant. clothes that you don't care if you ruin. Buy some jeans a size too big so when you gain weight from eating pizza at 2am you'll still be set.

You are at the crossroads of your life...you can choose 1 of two ways.

1.Party hard and get lots of chicks. (Aisle 6)

2. What MichaelD said.

You must remember to take pants.
Because when you don't, hilarity ensues!

Seriously, a good way to remember everything is to take a normal day and make a list of everything you use, then take out extraneous things.
