I love SUN's thin clients. They're sexy. I would love to have them setup in my house.

The benefits of patching a couple of servers as opposed to a few hundred desktops seems worth while to me.

now think larger scale. 10s of thousands of desktops.

Server dies, 10,000 employees are disabled

now how much revenue will be lost waiting for repair?

I don't know about the others, but 1 SUN server doesn't typically handle 10k thin clients. :p

True.

But a single 10K running an app for 10K clients is in norm.

I want a 10k. :(

We have a computer lab with 16 thin clients running from one terminal services server with no problem. Basically we use it host our Office Apps. Thin clients can save a lot of money for orgs that have lots of terminals. We could have went either way but chose the thin client route. It hasn't been without it's problems, but it works and no PCs to fix daily is really nice.

You know, this thread is very well timed. My boss just asked me to write a position paper on thin client computing for my organization. What's out there (for clients, servers and software), how it could be used in our organization and any data on the potential ROI that I can find from well-known sources like Gartner, etc. We've got 65,000 users in about 2500 sites, so it could be an interesting exercise.

In any case, interesting stuff here, keep it coming!

We're looking to make this move as well. Huge dilemma though - most of our systems are laptops, and our users are often out at clients - and a broadband connection is not always readily available (nor possible).

yeah, get with Gartner. Loads of good info.

You could start with getting the PC groups budget and come up with a "rough" model. One would think that the thin client manufactuers could help you out. Let us know what you find.
