Thin Clients...Compaq has a go...

I came upon this a few minutes ago and wanted to hear from all of you.

I wanted a Thin terminal for my mom so she could do here things on her own pc. All she uses is word, excel and the internet, so this of course seems ideal. ANy hardware-based opinions?

My question is this:

My main server will be a Linux server, and a win2k server perhaps. Will RDP provide a life-like connection for her? Basically, will it have the "lag" that Terminal services has?

RDP is the protocol that Windows NT Terminal Services and Windows 2000 Terminal services uses.

How much of a lag do you see in Terminal Services? I've used terminal services over a 100 meg switched network without any problems. The server was a PIII 750, 512meg ram with 5 Terminal services sessions.

We use thin clients at work. They aren't made by Compaq however. I sue them on a daily basis and notice no lag.

Yeah, I knew RDP was RS, but appearntly they have a lot of versions..I didn't know which one this one supported.....4.0 or 5

As has been mentioned, this requires RDS to a server to actually run full versions of Word, Excel, et al. It is a thin client after all. That means there is additional costs on top of just the box. And I notice that it runs about $500-$700 for one with adequate memory.

Why not build something like:

ASUS TUSI-M
CELERON 1.0AG(100MHZ)
128MB PC133
CDROM
1.44MB FDD
Case, Keyboard and Mouse
Legal XP Home

$404 (configured at mwave)


BTW, I thought these all ran WinCE but I notice that only the lowest model does, while the others run WinNTe. I'm not familiar with NTe. Is it a NT variant of WinCE?

From what I've heard Compaq's thin clients are really nice, my former boss that I still keep in touch with uses them at his new work, they have several hundreds of them in use, and he says they're really happy with them.

But for just home use, I'd say it's more trouble than it's worth, but thats just my oppinion 🙂

i doubt it would be worth it setting up a single thin client for her, especially when u could just build a slim-line flexATX solution for the same price, if not cheaper...

i.e. grab something like an AOpen H340D case w/ 180watt P4 PSU, MSI 6533 mobo mATX SIS 650 mobo, and something like a P4 1.6A combo...use integrated video, sound, LAN...and that case has provided feet for vertical standing.
