The "apple" was not used as a medaphore for sex in the Bible.

Eve tempted Adam with the fruit of the tree of knowledge.

no actual fruit is named.

I have never heard this (fruit being a metaphor of sex), and I have read the Bible front to back once, genesis in about 3 different translations, and taken classes in Old Testament studies. Apple is not even mentioned, just fruit.

Don't some scholars say it was more likely to be a pomegranate from some reason or other?

For the record, my bad joke aside...
the apple doesn't symolize sex, it symbolizes arrogance. Eve wanted to be like God, meaning she wasn't happy with who she was as God made her = arrogance.

in order for them to do the nasty and create life. that's why it's a metaphor sex... not arrogance. God knew that if adam and eve didn't get it on and have kids and create the human race, he'd be bored to tears with hardly anything to do... which defeats the purpose of life being created altogether (according to some christian beliefs).

What, exactly was this "Tree of Knowledge"?

tree of knowledge of good and evil... basically, it erases all innocence and sinlessness. after that, they had knowledge of good and evil. basically, it changed them from being robots to conscious humans.... but, then again, in my opinion, it's all a metaphor.

in my opinion, the tree of knowledge between good and evil symbolizes the mental evolution of animals to humans... eating the apple symbolizes procreation in the new age of knowing the difference of right and wrong, which is something lower animals can't do.

This is the "original sin" so often talked about by Christians.

I wonder how many people are happy as God made them? God gave us free will to strive to do bigger, better, different things. By His own rules, we are free to change ourselves as we feel like it, for better or worse.

I don't necessarily believe that, but I remember a scripture lecture I had last thursday on the topic. That's supposably what the church wants you to believe.

I'm not sure that free will applied to Eden like it does on earth. Or maybe it did...

After all we're just as free to screw ourselves over as eve apparently was. I would assume that being free to do something doesn't mean that we are free of the consequences of our actions.

In essence "we are free to change ourselves as we feel like it, for better or worse".

Good gawd.

At first I was going to call you all geeks, because I thought we were talking about some new MMORPG.

Then I realized we were talking about religion. Doh.

No offense, but how can any of you believe any of that crap? :p

It sounds absolutely ridiculous, a little less so if you look at it metaphorically.. but still.
