Transportation officials in Texas are scrambling to prevent hackers from changing messages on digital road signs after one sign in Austin was altered to read, "Zombies Ahead."

Chris Lippincott, director of media relations for the Texas Department of Transportation, confirmed that a portable traffic sign at Lamar Boulevard and West 15th Street, near the University of Texas at Austin, was hacked into during the early hours of Jan. 19.

"It was clever, kind of cute, but not what it was intended for," said Lippincott, who saw the sign during his morning commute. "Those signs are deployed for a reason ? to improve traffic conditions, let folks know there's a road closure."

"It's sort of amusing, but not at all helpful," he told FOXNews.com.

That IS AWESOME! I wish someone would hack the sign on my commute in Houston. For the last 4 days it's posted nothing but a missing elderly person message, somewhere 50 miles from where I'm at! HELLO!?! How is that improving traffic conditions? Now, I've got to slow down and check all the license plates so I can report in if I find him.

I think I remember reading about hacking these signs a long time ago. From what I remember, it's supposed to be incredibly easy to get access to them.

That's my recollection as well.

The first time this was posted, somebody explained how to hack them in the thread, IIRC 😛

I read the article and can't believe how easy it is. The Holy Grail would be hacking into the Amber Alert signs.

Yep

This is a Department of State warning. Your request from

Do they send the men in black if you get too many warnings?

This is really a bad idea.
If everyone hacks the signs to read zombies ahead , then nobody will believe it when the zombies really do attack !
The masses will be slaughtered !

I've got my chainsaw, shotgun, two assault rifles and claymores, but not everyone is well prepared.
