They can't enhance images in real life like they do on "Las Vegas," right?

Just watching an episode of Las Vegas. The way they can zoom in 50x on archived footage, then "enhance it" to full resolution seems a bit unlikely. In one recent episode, they caught an image reflected off of the window of a bus door, across 40 feet to the window of a cab, and determined the exact shade of lipstick a woman used to right a "help me" sign on a napkin. Just now they "pushed in" on a guys arm, then ran infrared on the footage to see the rest of his tatoo under his shirt.

Just confirming that not even the most expensive imaging equiptment can do that yet. It seems as if it's gotten more outlandish as the show has gone on.

I always laugh when I see that stuff. Call me stupid if I'm wrong but that is all total BS.

You cannot create pixels out of thin air. That crap cracks me up as well.

CSI style?

Zoom in on the corner or her eye.. The eye fluid will reflect back the person taking the picture.. Wait a second, what is that in the reflection? A porthole...... like on a boat?

WTF

Did you see last nights episode?

How they reduced Jay Mohr's "gait" by 1inch and scanned everyone in the hotel and found him in about 30 seconds?

LOL

or the tatoo

They can average the pixels of consecutive frames and get maybe 2x resolution. They can't zoom in 50x.

It's so fuggin' unbelievable that it's great television. Las Vegas is so unrealistic that you just sit back and enjoy the action and T&A.

That's all it's for and it succeeds marvelously

Yeah, that gait thing made me laugh. It seems like they think "well, the people that haven't figured out that most of this is fake yet aren't going to figure it out, so we might as well entertain them."

It's all BS with digital images, anyway, a pixel is a pixel and you can't make new ones - but there IS a lot of processing you can do with "film" photos to clean up an image. In the end, you are still limited to the 'grain' of the film, but that's usually way, way, WAY higher density than the image is scanned in as. If you had the means to get at the source image....you can get an awful lot of info out of it.

Still, shows like those "CSI" or anything like it blow that WAY out of proportion and use it as just a CPD. Which is a shame, really. Shows that limit themselves to real science wouldn't be any less interesting, it would just mean the writers couldn't be so lazy.

And we know how likely THAT is.

I can never believe they continue to pull that sh!t in movies. It's retarded. I haven't seen the TV show you're talking about but I've seen them do it in plenty of movies.

Exactly! The Wife and I watch it for entertainment (while I watch T&A!).

You can't knock a fictional show for having fictional technology.

I remember the first time I saw that on TV. I must have spent hours on Photoshop trying to do a lossless zoom :(

The best "Viva Las Vegas" was the one where the MIT geeks hijacked the lighting for the entire strip. The subplot involved face recognition software tweaking. I think there is some kind of rivalry between Harvard and MIT.:p

Everytime I watch that show I'm reminded Vanessa Marcel (Sam) was married to Corey Feldman. It makes me sad.

The scene in Blade Runner (my favorite movie, BTW) bugs me. How the heck did he turn the corner in that image?
