Sorry to burst your bubble, but throw out those crap ass Sony's. Buy the Grado, or the Senn.

throw out that model but consider the mdr-v6 ($70 shipped)

Sony MDR-V6....gotta stand up to my babies here, they cost less than 60 bucks and they're pretty much the standard in budget studio headphones.

heh, my old headphones (cheap plastic piece of crap) just died, and I was heading over to ATOT to ask for recommendations, and lo and behold, here's this thread. How 'bout that? ;)

If these are anywhere near as good as you are suggesting, I might just get a pair. But one question: about how long do they last? Does one side die after a few months of use? Do they snap like a twig under the slightest pressure?

you might wanna check out HD580's, although they *might* be out of your price range. About $120 refurb/new some places, and they last forever. I've accidentally stepped on mine, gotten them a bit wet, sat on them a few times, and they're still holding solid

Remind me to throw out any and all headphones that come with peripherals that I buy from now on, as I won't be needing those!

If anyone needs new headphones, give the Grado SR-60 a listen. You won't find a better sounding headphone for the price. (~$60-70USD)

Sennheiser HD497 that are ~50 at amazon.com are comparable, and some say much more comfy (but the grados can be modified for comfort enhancements)

SR-60 durability is pretty good though the simple mechanism to adjust the height of the cans wore out rather quickly...meaning you must adjust them every time you put them on.

Trouble with most Senns is that you need an amplifier to get the best sound from them. The SR-60s can be powered by just about anything and still sound very good.

Sennheiser are kinda overrated.... I had a pair and much prefer my Sony's. (traded them in for the Sony's)

Got myself the SR-80's. The 60's lacked a bit in the bass area so I tried out the 80's and thought they were better. To me, definitely worth the $30 difference.

Are you using them with an amp?

I've wanted a pair of good headphones for a while now, & SR-80's + an amp would be a nice combo.

I was torn between the Grado SR-80s and the Koss Pro-4AAs, ended up with the Koss because I really wanted something a little more heavy duty and in a closed design. They're friggin awesome but exercise your neck or something, Koss is seriously hefty.

Nope, the amp in my Nomad 3 is plenty fine for it. In fact, the default volume in the Nomad 3 is 15 (scale is 0-25 for some weird reason). I generally have it set to 12 with my SR-80's.

If you are planning on using a portable with them, find a shop where you can demo the cans with that portable (bring yours along). Thats what I did. I tried out the SR-60's and SR-80's and the SR-80's where much better for my type of music.

Don't generalize the entire brand. Some of their 'phones really need an amp to sound their best (HD280, HD580, HD600) and some sound great without an amp (HD497, HD570)

Don't generalize an entire company's line of products based on one of their models. Some of their stuff is crap, but some is jaw droppingly stunning.
Oh, and way to be specific in your statement, considering that both of the companies named make more headphone models than you would bother to count.

"Fair" according to the reviews. I have used them for gaming but the positioning is not ideal. They are bang-for-the-buck audiophile cans.

Well let's see what I said:

There is no generalization or inaccuracy. As I said most Senns need an amp to sound best. You mentioned the only 2 models that arguably don't need an amp. But Sennheiser has dozens of models so it's true to say most of them do need an amp for best results.

I think it's silly to ignore the amplification issue when you're spending a decent amount of money on cans. There's nothing worse than buying expensive new headphones then realizing your player can't supply enough juice to make them sound better than the crap cans you're replacing!

I use an amp with my SR-80's. It was well worth the $20.

wow. these headphones are just amazing. even in games they are so much better than the technics i was using before (which weren't cheap headphones, they cost around 100 bucks when i bought them). i don't see any issues with sound positioning or anything. very very nice. off to enjoy some more bf1942.

The Sony V700 headphones are great, have not heard these Grado headphones you speak of, but the V700's are one of the better headphones availible out there. They dont suck much power which is great for me because I usually use a portable cd player, their super comfortable for sure and handle bass very well. I also like to listen to music without pissing off the people around me which I've heard is a problem with the Grados.
