Story:
N.J. Teen Accused of Child Porn for Posting Nude Photos of Self

Associated Press

Thursday, March 26, 2009

TRENTON, New Jersey ? 14-year-old New Jersey girl has been accused of child pornography for posting nearly 30 explicit nude pictures of herself on MySpace.com ? charges that could force her to register as a sex offender if convicted.

The case comes as prosecutors nationwide pursue child pornography cases resulting from kids sending nude photos to one another over cell phones and e-mail.

Legal experts, though, could not recall another case of a child pornography charge resulting from a teen's posting to a social networking site.

MySpace would not comment on the New Jersey investigation, but the company has a team that reviews its network for inappropriate images.

In the New Jersey case, the Passaic County Sheriff's Office investigated and discovered the girl had posted the "very explicit" photos of herself, sheriff's spokesman Bill Maer said Thursday.

"We consider this case a wake-up call to parents," Maer said. The girl posted the photos because "she wanted her boyfriend to see them," he said.

The teen, whose name has not been released because of her age, was charged with possession and distribution of child pornography. She was released to her mother's custody.

If convicted of the distribution charge, she would be forced to register with the state as a sex offender. She also could face up to 17 years in jail, though such a stiff sentence is unlikely.

Ok, as I understand it, the purpose of child pornography laws is to protect children from exploitation and abuse at the hands of others who create and "consume" such pornography, a worthwhile goal. How in the world does the prosecution of this girl for posting pictures of HERSELF do anything positive? I suppose it could dissuade other moronic teenage girls from posting pictures of themselves, but I fail to see how this prosecution protects this girl -- since the intent of the law is to protect children, most notably the children featured in the porn itself. Ruining her life because she exposed herself, and hurt nobody and nothing but her reputation, somehow is a good use of limited judicial resources and the criminal system?

If you want to send a "wake up call" to parents, publicize the case. I would venture a guess that the girl's parents probably don't want to see their daughter thrown into jail, unless she's a complete miscreant, and shouldn't it be the parent's responsibility to discipline their child when she's been stupid?

Does she create child pornography when she looks in a mirror?

Yeah, seems like prosecutors are just trying to make an example of these teens. It's a gross violation of the spirit of these laws IMO.

This is what happens when we get all crazy and puritanical. Kids need to be protected but more it's kind of ridiculous that a child could in effect be her own predator.

I never understood why it would be illegal to take pictures of yourself as a minor, wait till you're an adult, and then sell them.

I mean, don't you need a victim to have a crime?

lol... what a mind bender :)

What I'm more pissed about was the utter lack of this when I was in HS. Those chicks were lame back then. They didn't do any of this stuff for BFs back then. Now you got all these young slutty girls posting up nudes of themselves for their BF in public, not to mention the vast amount of free and easy pron on the net. Back in my day you had to steal playboys, and even then those bitches were still covered in more Bush than Texas... You had to hold it up to the light to maybe maybe see some hot vulva action thru the drapes.
Maybe, just maybe you had that one fucked up friend whose dad had a penthouse or even hustler sub and didn't really lock it up. <- that shit was fraking gold, and got re-used for years.

Now all these damn kids with their naked photo messages and 2 girls 1 cup. Its not right. Is this what America is coming too? Yes, apparently so. and often.

This is the fault of the American people. They permit sex to be used to promote sales. They permit themselves to be made to feel worthless if they aren't sexy. The only obscenity in the mirror here is you.

Absolutely fucking stupid. Is there not a sane person in our government willing to put an end to this nonsense?

I was reading the Washington Post the other day and there was a comment from a reader who went to the Brtiney Spears concert the other night. She said it was a decent concert...aside from "all the teen girls dressed as prostitutes."

It's true. On my way home from work that evening, I saw all these teens in mid-thigh-short skirts in like 30/40 degree weather, and I was like WTF is this? Prostitute convention in DC?

The USA has such a split personality on sex. We promote it and sell it in so many ways...only to turn around and do shit like this.

Yes, Britney Spears gives a great concert, except for all the girls in the audience who dress exactly like the person they are seeing in concert. That reader sounds like a complete idiot.

But I agree; we use sex to sell everything, then are shocked when kids start acting like whores. We've put sex on this vaulted pedestal where we can't actually show it, but we can allude to it and make it out to be the best thing ever. We can use tits in bikinis to sell every product known to man, but flash a nipple at the Superbowl and the country shits a brick. In many ways, this repression of honest sexuality is a driving force behind children wanting to get involved with sex at younger and younger ages. That anyone would be shocked by this trend is shocking in and of itself.

Actually there was nipple. The star thing was some sort of funky-kinky nipple piercing or decoration. With a high definition picture the nipple was so clear you could see duct.

Child pornography laws and prosecution have gotten way to overzealous IMO. Some of the prison sentences handed out are just absurd.

Self rape?

Only if you resist and say no but you keep doing it.

Well, if you aren't of legal age, incapable of legal consent. That's rape.

I mean, if you are 13 years old, and you masturbate, you're a pedophile. No way around it.
