Hey guys. I'm having a helluva time trying to get to the thermostat on a 1992 VW Passat GL (4 cyl.) Does anybody have a diagram or instruction list of the procedure. I can't seem to find any way to do it without removing the A/C compressor first, which I really don't want to do.

Dude, you didn't buy the mechanics book for it? Go down to autozone and pick one up. They are like $20 and have pictures of where everything is. They are a complete lifesaver.

They're out of print. And I need it today, so I can't order one online. The ones that are still around are like $60

Are you sure it's the thermostat. I've been looking at some Passat forums and it seems that the temperature sending unit is a known bad part.

I know that it works, cuz the car still boils over occasionally.

What happens is the car heats up to around 250f then the thermostat opens up and it cools to 240, then back up to 250, then down again. If I put any stress (ie driving up a hill) other than just driving around town, it over heats. I'm thinking the shop that replaced it put it in backwards, or my water pump is going out. I don't really want to replace my water pump, so I just want to either a) check the thermostat and make sure it isn't turned around, or b) just yank the thermostat out for the summer.

Edit:

I've checked the hoses to make sure they're not collapsing, too... they're fine.
The car doesn't have a regular radiator cap, so that's out.
I know that VW's like to run hotter than other cars, but this is too hot.

Can you get a pic of the area around the thermostat housing?

Just getting to the bolts may not be your only problem, you also
will need enough room to clean off any of the old gasket material there.

I wish I could. My roommate's lovely dog chewed the USB transfer cable for my camera, so I can't take a picture of it. I know that if I could get it off, I could clean it pretty easily. The opening is in a semi-accessible area, but the bolts are just rediculous. Whomever designed this car needs to be shot. This thing is horrible to service. There's only one mechanic in town that will even consider touching it, and I don't trust him.
