ThermoElectric Coolers.

I just want to know if I can replace the heatsink on that with my own heatsink and fan. I say that they replaced the fan, but what about a new heatsink

Hmm, reminds me of the Thermaltake SubZero 4G thing..

ya, the one i have is the thermaltake subzero.

i currently own a Zalman Flower HeatSink as well. tonite, i'll try and see if i can replace the Thermaltake HS with my Zalman. my reason for prefering the zalman is i like the screw down as opposed to the clip the thermaltake has.

ok, so i haven't taken it apart yet, but there is a peltier that is screwed into the aluminum hs. the peltier is copper.

it also looks like there might be some kind of superglue / paste in between.

i do not recommned a TEC unless you got really beefy aircooling or watercooling. it can be done with aircooling but not very efficient.. for real cooling it takes much time and care as you should be concerned about condensation issues - not something DIY-phobia crowd should take a plunge in. unless you enjoy the actual research and labor involved in building a water cooled machine, i suggest you just get something like koolance...

did you read the review i linked? it has an external power source outside of the PC Power supply. it is microprocessor controlled so that it only provides cooling when CPU is being taxed.

sorry, i must admit i didnt really read the review, just glanced at the link for few sec... i guess i will do that now 🙂 you sounded new to TECs in your initial post so i figured you could use some of my previous experiences as a guiding light... oh well 🙂

EDIT

Con:

* Expensive. You can achieve similar (or better) performance from a conventional HSF, at 1/3rd the price
* Noisy stock fans.

that sums it up i supopse.. common sense leads me to believe there is no way that puny fan will be enough to dissipate the massive heat generated by the TECs (these things get insanely hot, they generate tons of heat on their own), either that or they arent using a TEC with high enough W in which case it maybe doing more harm than good...
