Thermaltake Volcano II, any good???

Pretty poorly.. I wouldn't trust it past a 100mhz overclock.. anymore than that and let's just say you're taking a big risk.. although sticking a hairdryer 60mm Delta on it might improve the performance your money would be better spent on a Taisol..
 
Works fine on my stock Duron 750 on a KK266. I don't think my temps are accurate, though, as I get 36c idle and 39c load! But, here's a warning: the clip on the V2 is a pain in the ass to get on there!
P.S.: I used thermal compound with it, not the pad that came on the bottom of the V2.
 
will it suffice for a 1.33 tbird(non OCed)? I just bought 2 of em for 1.33 systems i am building for customers...
 
Thermaltake claims it will handle up to 1.5 GHz, so if it doesnt handle it then it can be returned. I would personally not get it for a 1.5 tho.
Scraping off the pad and using radio shack compound reduced my cpu temp 10 deg C !!
Keeps my duron 850 (@850) at 30C idle (same as my case temp), 40C full load, avg use 35C.
I got it because its only slightly more than a no-name hsf and half the price of a decent overclocker hsf (cause im not o'clocked)
p.s. I used a small slot screwdriver to put it on/take it off. its definitely under some tension, but I never felt in danger of breaking it or scratching the board.
 
My Duron 750 is running at 900 (6x150) with this HSF. I've never tried to bump it up, but I'll try really quickly for ya'. By the way, I just left the thermal pad on.
 
Well, I'm typing this at 1005 (7.5x134), so my Duron 750 will at least get this far! It wouldn't get into Windows at (7x150) = 1050. I had to clear CMOS. Prime95 is doing just fine.
 
Sorry to get back so late. I have an Antex SX830 w/ (1) 80mm intake and (1) 80 mm exhaust. I'm using Volcano II with the stock fan. So really, none of my cooling is special. Like I said, I didn't even take the pad off.

Right now, I'm running an AKCA Duron 750 at 975 (6.5*150), as I prefer the higher FSB to the magic "Gig" status. Also, I've never bumped the FSB above 150, as this is where I want to test everything for a few weeks. Under load (Prime 95 and 3dMark2001), it tops out at 43C on an iWill KK266-R. General internet surfing usually has me at 37-38C. RAM is Kingmax TinyBGA 166MHz, running at the "Fastest" setting in my BIOS (CAS 2 all the way).
 
I'm running an Athlon 1.33 @ 1.54GHz with a Volcano II.

CPU current temp: 48c
System current temp: 29c
 
Are these full load temps?

Idle temps mean absolutely nothing.

Fire up a CPU intensive program like RC5, Seti@Home, Prime95 and then record temps after 30 minutes. I doubt a VolcanoII would be posting temps like the ones above. The C/W rating would be it in the region of Alphas, GlobalWins, Tiasols etc. with high CFM fans. For example, I calculate Dan's C/W rating of < 0.22(using 1.5Ghz and 1.85V, on the conservative side). That's almost impossible for ANY cooler to achieve with the ~23-25CFM fan it uses. Just can't happen.

IMO, this cooler will work for AMD systems below 1Ghz. You will have high temps, but it'll get you by. For a high OC rig, spend some more $$$ and get something decent.
 
on my KT7A, I bent the thermistor up to contact the chip, and I get readings of 44C after 45 mins of Prime95 on a Duron 700@1005 with a V2...decent in my book, plus its quiet and mine doesn't vibrate.
 
One more opinion on the V2's clip: I think it's very good and definitely one of the best I've seen lately. Installation was very easy and absolutely without risk for my T-Bird.

I'll vote for liking the clip, though I've not tried many others. It did take a big chunk out of my finger when I was prebending it and it slipped, driving the metal heatsink into my knuckle. But even that is cool as a computer isn't really yours until you leave some blood on it.

But if you have a flathead screwdriver with the right size blade, it is a perfect fit and the clip is a breeze to put on and off.

Umm, ok....
I didn't prebend my clip, maybe that's why I had a harder time... but I don't think they need to be making clips that need to be bent before being put on.
 
Well, I've never not done at least some prebending for any clip since the fan on my P166. Anything helps if you run through the motions a few times.

As for blood--I've left some on/in every machine so far--though without sharp metal case edges it is a bit more difficult. One good contender is the back of cards--often many little sharp points.
