Thermaltake TR2 RX W0134RU 550W ATX12V

I am on a rather limited budget for a gaming pc for use with a plasma tv. I already have a case and HD.

My expected system components (~$250):
AMD Phenom II 720BE
Biostar 790GX
G.Skill PC2 6400

I am looking for a PSU and video card to finish the build at around $400

This seems to fit the bill at $149 (not including additional MIRs):

Ever since an el cheapo Powmax PSU died (and took my Hard Drive and Video Card with it years ago), I have been crazy about trying to get the best PSU out there. I was going to go with a Corsair, but it seems to be outside my budget.

A guess I could stretch my budget a little to the following setup if it gets more votes over the thermaltake above ($30 more not including rebates):

Corsair 450W psu at $69.99 with promo code:

4850 at ~$100 with promo code:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814102824

As with most Thermaltake PSUs...it is overpriced.

A Passive PFC 550W PSU with no more than 33A/396W 12V ouptut (possibly even less than that) for nearly $100....NO THANK YOU!!

BTW it is actually only a 500W platform....PSF500V as you can see on the output table label...is the model number for a Passive PFC 500W Channel Well Technologies platform.

The link you provided says $194 for the combo, not $149, is there are promo code you didn't mention?

When you add it to your cart, it is $149

So I am not concerned about price. Rather, I am concerned about performance. In the past, I have gotten the impression that Thermaltake makes average rather than excellent psu's. However, what I forgot to mention is that there seem to be a lot of positive reviews about the psu.

If that is truely the BFG LS-550 at $57 then that is a much better buy.

Ok with the link above, they claim the Model is the LS-550, they have a thumbnail of the LS-550, but the thumbnail that led to that link and the the larger picture that the thumbnail of the LS-550 brings up, are actually pictures of the GS-550. If it is the LS-550 then it is a much better buy than the Thermaltake, if it is the GS-550, then is not much better than the deal you are getting with the promo and combo.

Edit...the specs also claim it has active PFC.....so if you decide to buy it and they send you the GS-550 with the red voltage selector switch on the back...return it as false advertising.

After tax and shipping, it comes to $70. Should I consider the 450W corsair as well (free shipping)?

The VX450 is a better PSU than the Thermaltake...yeah...and has the same 12V output.

The deal you mention with the GPU and PSU for $149, essentially brings the PSU price down to around $50....which is about where it belongs.

I suppose it depends on whether or not that extra $20 is worth it to you.

You may want to shop around some more though and use a site like pricegrabber to look at some other PSUs like

Antec Earthwatts 500W
BFG LS-550
Corsair VX450

you may be able to find those for much cheaper with free shipping.

I searched nextagg and pricegrabber. Overall, the best prices are about the same (not including rebates).

The Antec is available at Newegg and Buy.com with free shipping for about $74
The BFG for $70 (after shipping) at provantage seems to be the best deal on that model
The Corsair is about $70 at newegg with free shipping

Do you think the Corsair will be sufficient for the radeon 4850, a BD drive, and 1-2 HDs? Several Newegg reviews seem to indicate so.

Uhh, incase you haven't made up your mind here's some more info.

Most "brands" of PSU's don't actually make their PSU's. Only a few manufacturers actually make them or the components and sell them to the brand name companies for rebadging.

Thermaltake for the most part has never been good for PSU with one exception. The Toughpower line is made by Channel Well if I remember correctly and that line is very nice.

However, the toughpower line is NOT cheap.

Unlike the cheapie raidmax, powmax, ultra, apevia, or other really really really crappy PSU brands that use more bling than substance, the tr2 isn't a bad PSU. Not great, but not bad.

A few Antec PSU's might also fit the bill for your budget and requirements. Have you looked into those? I know fry's has a few deals sometimes on antec PSUs every so often.

That TR2 is also made by CWT....just a lower quality non-PFC unit rated at Peak output instead of continuous output.

Most Thermaltakes I have seen are overpriced....especially compared the competition that is selling PSUs based on the same CWT platforms.
