Thermaltake PSUs

My rig uses a 420 Thermaltake PSU. I specifically bought it because I had been assured it was only a rung or two down from Antec and the other premium PSUs. I didn't want a cheap PowMax PSU or anything, but I thought the Thermaltake seemed decent, got reviewed well, was nice and heavy, all that jazz. However, I've seen a lot of PSU recommendations from you guys lately, and Thermaltakes aren't getting mentioned real often.

Are they good, reliable power supplies, or in the same echelon as PowMax and the other junk generics? Thanks.

They're okay power supplies; a step below Fortron (and rebadgers like PCP&C (TurboCool), Zippy/Emacs, OCZ)/Seasonic (and rebadgers like PCP&C (Silencer))/Antec/Enermax, but certainly not PowMax-level trash. The fact that they're a bit below the others mentioned above is partly why they're not recommended as much as those manufacturers. It's also because the general quality of most of their products in general is about average, by many standards.

Many thermaltakes are good... and definately not cheapo PSU's. You should look at getting a power supply with Active PFC (power factor correction) since they tend to be the most efficient and provide the cleanest and most reliable power with least amount of worries.

Thermaltake PSU's are ok, but I wouldn't put one in my main rig. I have a 420w in my backup rig. I had one in my main rig, and it died after only 2 days, so I RMA'd it and put it in my backup rig, and put my 350w enermax back in my main rig.

I had one in my current system (see my sig) and it ran great. But I am upgrading my video card (BFG 6800 Ultra OC) and wanted a hi perf PSU (namely PC Power & Cooling 510 Deluxe) to power everything without any worries. If it wasn"t for the video card upgrade, the Thermaltake would still be in there.

Below the league of Antec, ENermax, Seasonic, Zalman, Vantec. And a far cry from OCZ, PCP&C and Zippy.

They are for entry level systems. They are definately better than powmax, but they do not take the step up to quality that Antec and the others do. (Ie small HS, and Capacitors and MOST notably noisy fans).

So i mean they are decent bang for your buck much better than Powmax but not worth it if you can afford any of the other makers listed.

When I owned a desktop, I used a TT480 watt the voltage rails were always excellent.
Now it's in a friends machine running a P4 2.0a @ 3.0GHz without missing a beat.
I can say for the price they are very decent.

Quality, or generic junk?

neither . . . . rather it's solid value for a budget PS. 😉

i have a 480w in my case and it does what it advertises . . . . however, there is "only" 18a on the 12v rail so there isn't a lot of extra room for o/c'ing.

Exactly apoppin!

Someone will be asking about high end system with FX55, 6800U or X850XTPE and what not then they will have a TT PSU in it. It isn't meant for that. It is a nice BUDGET/ LOW END PSU. Not meant for the highend gaming.

They are noisy though 🙁 but still pretty good for budget.
