Title says it all, I am looking for a replacement cooler for my 3850's and I think one of the only options is the Duorb for a Crossfire setup. The HR-03GT really require a fan to be viable and fitting a fan makes the HR-03 a 3 slot solution thus it is not viable for Crossfire, the same goes for the Accellero S1, running that in passive is not really worth it over a Duorb which I understand is 2slot solution INCLUSIVE of the fan.

I see Thermaltake say the Duorb is compatible with the 3870 yet no mention of the 3850.....I am 99.9% sure that it would fit fine seeing as the 3850/70 have pretty much identical layouts and that the mounting holes are in the same place so I am looking for anyone who perhaps has a Duorb on a 38xx series card or any recommendations.

Thankyou

You have the HIS IceQ3 coolers on there now, whats wrong with them? Video cards only see minimal gains from cooling below about 60C load.

Not true, I have both HR-03's on my 2900XT and had one on my 8800GTX and they both saw at least a 40mhz more on the core as a result of improved cooling. The Iceq 3 cooler are 'fine' however they could be better, it isn't real copper (on the IceQ's) as I found out when I took them off last weekend to reapply some MX-2. After lapping the cooler it was clear that it was aluminium that was...I guess, 'painted' even applying rubbing alcohol made the coppery color run....in all I'd rather have a REAL copper setup. With my prior HR-03's, load temps came to 50c in most cases and I'm hoping I can achieve the same results with the Duorb.

40mghz core(over stock) is good for what? 2-3FPS in a corssfire set-up? I still call that minimal.

Ignoring that all together though, check out the thermalright V2.

I guess I am an enthusiast in the sense of the word that more mhz is never enough :p.

Anyways thanks for the recommendation! Judging by the reviews here and here the V2 does perform very well with an 80mm fan- which would be how I intend to run it. I am now leaning towards this Thermalright V2 over the Duorb since in the past the Thermalright products I have bought have always been top notch stuff so unless someone can convince me otherwise this looks like the best choice.

I had a V1 when they first came out and AFAIK they were the first application of heatpipes for video cards and they were downright amaizing for the time. The v2 came out a while after and offered very close the same performance but, in a more compact size that fit just on the lower side of the video card and between the two they pretty much held as top dog for at least a year, i think longer. IMHO for it's size the V2 is an amizing deal.

I don't disagree with you on every mhz counts. I've got a Arctic cooler NV5 with the fan and ducting removed and a 70mm cheapy assu fan mounted directly to it. Idles at about 35 and loads no higher than 52 which I'd say is good enough for the time being.
