Thermaltake CPU cooler question

I am still trying to track down a noise at startup, so the question.

I have the Thermaltake Silent Boost cooler on my Athlon 1.5 GHz. Does this unit start out at a high speed and then slow down?

Thought the noise was my HD, but now am not sure.

Thanks.

If it's only for a few seconds...Yes. The fan is starting out on high/max RPM and then slowing down when it gets your speed settings or whatever.

OK ...that makes sense.
Now I am wondering if I may have a bit of a quirk in the Thermaltake - as it will usually stay on as much as 45 seconds. It was staying on less, but has increased in time as far as the higher speed.

It may be that dust has gotten in the fins and needs to be claened out.

Thanks for the reply.

Prevent the fan from moving with your finger & turn the machine on to test it out. The cpu is not going to overheat for quite a while without a fan.

May try that - but just for a micro-second. Last thing I want to do is fry a CPU. I will post back.

I did it - held the fan still as I booted ...NOT the Thermaltake. Still makes the noise.

I think my next step is to put an 8 gig Maxtor I have in place of the Seagate and see if I get any of the same sound. Should change. If it does not - I would think that would indicate that the PS may not be strong enough.

It is the CD DVD player. I unplugged it, and no noise.

Apparently it will start even though it is empty at bootup. I was not aware of this.

Thanks for all the help.
