Here's a tip.. the new THermalTake ChromeOrb does not fit on an Abit KT7-Raid.. it digs into 2 of the capacitors..not allowing it to get the first clip on. any suggestions on a good fan as a replacement?

Can some one tell me something, I am looking to buy a KT7 (not the raid version).
Will the Chromeorb fit on this board? Are the capasitors out of the way on the non-raid version?

Thanks.

Yep, the ORB won't fit, the caps are present on the non-raid version. Get a TAISOL CEK733092 cheap, effective and AMD approved.

actually, I managed to fit a golden orb on the KT7...I'm not using that cooler now as it was a bit sketchy...but the capacitors will bend just a little and there is enough clearence...I know, probably not a great practice, but if you're stuck and don't mind taking the chance...

I had minimal problems attaching my chrome orb to my KT7-RAID. Fish54 was right the capacitors do bend out of the way enough, and if you wrap a thin bit of material around the orb while placing it you reduce the risk of taking chunks out of the capacitors.

The capacitors on my kt7 non-raid were stuck down close to the mobo, so I couldn't bend them out of the way. I did remove four fins from my chrome orb and it fits without a problem.

Hmm, Fish54, what do you mean saying that the golden orb is a bit sketchy? You had some problems with it?

DaddyG,

Got the TAISOL CEK733092. It definitely works a lot better than orginal HSF, However, I took fan off and side closest to Heatsink shows it's a Delta AFB0612HA, which from Delta's site looks like a 16.6 CFM fan. Taisol's site says that CEK733092 has a 21.19 CFM fan, so I wrote Taisol to find out.

Do you know which fan is on yours?

EDIT: Got a reply from Taisol already....they said the fan in the two 1.1gig HSFs is specially designed by Delta for Taisol, and is 21.19 CFM

Gustav, I jsut meant that I wasn't real happy with the way it fit, not to mention it was a Socket 370 GORB, so I couldn't attach it properly. I actually never turned on the machine with the Gorb, but used it to see if one would fit, and if I should buy one. -Fish

Actually it does fit, you just have to be very careful...

but the GOrb isn't very good at cooling, my Duron 600 @ 800 is running about 52-53C right now, and I know this baby can hit 950...

I have on order Globalwin FOP32-1, and I am looking for a new case for better air ventilation.....

If your handy with a grinder, you can grind off the bottom part of 2-3 fins on the Chrome Orbs (or any other orb for that matter)

make sure you clean it off, and there arnt any bits of lose metal attatched to it still...

www.auspcmarket.com.au is selling modded versions. take a look at the pics...

I found this out last month when I received my brand new Abit KT7-RAID and "NEW" Chrome Orb thinking this combo was unbeatable. Then I tried to put the Orb on and it was a b%#tch to get on. Not noticing how d*mn sharp the fin edges are on the orb, I ripped holes in 2 of my capacitors trying to squeeze it on. When that didn't work, I was pissed cause I couldn't fit the fan on, so I decided to just boot up for a "few seconds" to see if the "pencil trick" would allow me to change the chip settings. I booted up WITH NO HEATSINK! HOW STUPID OF ME! :disgust: It booted up just long enough for me to get into the Bios and then "click", it shut off. I'm thinking, $hit, it must have got too hot and shut down by itself with some type of alarm or something. Well, I never got either that processor or the KT7-Raid motherboard working again after a week of trying. What REALLY PI$$ED me off is that the d#mn place where I got my mobo wouldn't take it back because of the f*cked up capacitors from the ORB! After exchanging the Processor and buying a new mobo (another Abit KT7-Raid), I still had the same heatsink. This time I was a bit wiser. I broke a few fins off of the Orb so it would fit with no problem. But it seems like it's running kind of hot compared to eveyone elses. D650@900, 55C with load. I don't know if breaking off a few of those fins was a good idea or not. I hope it didn't hurt the performance of the Orb. I even bought some Arctic Silver to apply it with (this stuff knocks off 2 or 3C more than the cheap stuff). I dunno. I've read a lot of articles on overclocking and cooling and it seems the Alpha Pal6035 is the best solution for extreme cooling. I could get my Duron up to 950, but it was unstable when playing video or encoding MP3s. I'm considering doing that voltage adjustment to the mobo to get some extra power.

For all you Newbies out there:
DON'T EVEN THINK OF STARTING THE COMPUTER WITHOUT A HEATSINK AND FAN AND DON'T BUY A STUPID CHROME ORB FOR THE ABIT KT7 MOTHERBOARD. GO WITH ALPHA PAL OR GLOBALWIN!

Hey AMD, If I were you, I wouldn't be sharing that story with the members of the forum ;)
