thermaltake big typhoon

Is anyone using this for an opty dual core? What are your load temps with the cpu stock?

room temp 78f

idle: 37-38c
load:up to 45c (not good)

I'm using as5, but the mounting for this heatsink is so awful, that i feel that maybe its not on correctly. A load temp of 45c is very bad considering i haven't even overclocked yet.

I didn't use the optional backing plate. On the instructions it said that if you have a metal backing plate (which i do) that all you need to do is install the hold down plate on the heatsink. The problem with this type of mounting is that you can't get any type of screw driver to fit under that little space to hold it down. I'm guess thats my problem.

idk but something is wrong there... did you apply too much AS5? that can be counter productive (its designed to fill microscopic layers...so only a super super thin layer needs to be applied... you'd be surprised how many people make a ghetto thermal pad out of it LoL)

do you have more than the 1 listed HD in there? like say... 4 HDs? lol

how hot is your GTX getting?

I only have one hd, and my other heatsink was a sythe ninja, and my load temp with that thing was only 39c with a 85f room, but the downfall about the heatsink was it didn't cool the pwmic for #$%@.

Well i decided to put my other heatsink back on, the sythe ninja. And i can't figure out why i'm getting such idle temps, as well as load. Before i put the thermaltake big typhoon on i had a opty 165 stepping CCBWE 0607 stock in with a sythe ninja heatsink with idle temps of 33-34c with an 85f room temp, load never touched 40c at that room temp.

Now i have a new opty 165 stepping CCB1E 0608MPMW stock with a 77-78c room temp with it idling at 35-37c with load temps of 46c. I don't know why its so hot, when i had my other opty at 1.425v even the load never touched 45c, i hit that now stock.

I really don't think i mounted the heatsink wrong, the ninja heatsink uses clips for mounting which is easy, so its not like i had to use screws to get it right. Do you think that different steppings for the same type of opty get different temps? Meaning some may run hotter than others?

I use it on an X2 the first time I installed it the the got bumped a few times because this thing is a pain to mount securely so that no movement can accure and you would be surprised what bumping it can do to the layer of AS5 or this new white paste that people are giving out which in my opinion is horrible

I'm going to remount the heatsink again. If that does nothing, then i don't know what to do. Its not so much my idle thats bothering my, but my load temps.

Ok i remounted the heatsink 4 times total, 3 for the thermaltake big tyhoon, and 1 for the scythe ninja with the same high idle/load temps. I'm really pissed because i have what is supposidly an amazing stepping, but can't get acceptable idle and load temps.

Now i'm starting to think that its the cpu thats having the problem. And just for a test i think i'm going to put the other 165 stepping is to see if it makes a difference, and if it does then i guess i have no choice to take it back which is something i do not want to do. Man optys are such a pain in the a$$.

And yes i'm using as5

well this is how I mounted the the big typhoon for mysellf. I did it in slow stages, I of course put the bottom mount on spounge, mylar and all, then I put the gold connectors on, then I seated the CPU. I used AR5 (well the german equavalent to it since that is where I am currently living) I had the mobo sitting on as flat of a surface as I could, I cleaned up the excess AR5 because that stuff is just plain messy even with a stupid applicator card. Then Ì sat the big typhoon down kind of in the middle so to speak so that there was even amount of cooper sticking out on each side. This step can be the tricky part putting the top bracket on without moving it (because I have yet to get the screws sticking straight up perfectly, one always angles) then juse with your fingers or very easily with a pair of needle nose pliars tighten the nuts. What I did to test to make sure the top H bracket was tight was I pushed down on the bracket if it tilted I would adjust accordingly. Now when putting your Mobo back in becareful not to bump the typhoon because it could still not be perfectly tight. And it it moves it can move the termal paste with ease and that can cause a problem.

hey guys, rule #1 with Big Typhoon...make sure its tight, my top H bracket has slight bend...the cooler should not b able to move once mounted. thk u 😎
