Thermalright XP120 Question?

I just installed my thermalright XP 120 Heatsink and what I am wandering is, is the fan suppose to blow in on the heatsink or blow away from it?
 
It is more effective when the fan blows down on the heatsink. There is a website that tested this cooler both ways and it was almost 8C cooler when the fan was blowing down on the heatsink.
 
Really, the only time you might condsider reversing the flow of a cooler, is if it is shrouded by design. Some, like the Scythe Kamakaze, and the PAL 8045 work as well/better in reverse flow, but they are the exception, not the rule.

So it should be blowing on the heatsink instead of away right?

Thats the way I got it right now.

FFS, not blow on the hs, let it suck from the hsf and blow into the case so the other fans can move the warme air outside case, and unless JulesMaximus can show us a review i dont believe him, that temperatures decrease when u let blow fan on the hsf. Has to blow away from hsf.

Actually, I read through the review again after reading your comments temps were the same on suck vs blow. I read the graph wrong. It would really depend on how you have your case configured though. Try it both ways and see which one is more efficient on your system.
 
agree, i read some reviews and tested myself cuz i got the xp-120 and blowing away was 3-5°C less hot then blowing on the hsf.

Thanks I might have to give that a try. I am pleased with the temp drops I have now but would always like more.
 
I love the heatsink. I only noticed a 1C difference vs. suck blow. It probably depends on case air flow and RPM's of your fan though. I could care less about noise...my speakers are always up so I got a 3000rpm Panaflo.

Unfortunately some family members thought it would be nice to pick out hardware parts for christmas. I'm stuck with an intel system... P4 Prescott 2.8 oc'ed to 3.5 but idle is usually about 28.5 and load is around 47 with an ambient of 22

I can't complain. It's the thought that counts :/
 
Thermalright's instructions don't explicitly say to mount the fan in the blow position but their illustrations always show the fan going on that way. Besides, if you mount the fan in the blow position, you're also getting a free RAM cooler, depending on your board layout.
 
I tried both ways. Blowing in the heatsink was more effective for me, but that may be just because I have a side panel fan blowing in.

Yeah that doesnt sound right.

Going to flip my fan the other way right now and see what happens

Athlon XP 1800+ @ 2.189

idle = 37-8C
Load = about 43C

Will post back in 10 mins, shutting comp down now 🙂

eye could send you pics 🙂...it's not hard when it's friggin cold in ur room. The thermostat in the hall says it's about 72F but I think my room is colder than that

but you also have to remember....that's the mobo givin me those #'s. It's an Aopen mobo on 865chipset. I keep the side panel off the case and the fan is 114cfm's

I agree with hundesau. In the case of a xp90 or 120, they are open fins. All that is required is air movement across the surface area. Fans do move air slightly better blowing then sucking due to static resistance.
