Thermalright xp-120 or xp-90-copper?

Which is better? The Thermalright xp-120 or the xp-90-copper? The 120 has a larger surface area but it's also bulkier. Would the xp-90 in copper do just as good of a job for about the same price?

I'd get the 120 given those option. I'll submit just getting the regular 90 as an option as well. The copper doesn't add that much to it.

Unless you are talking about weight.

There both good. It's your call.

The XP-90C will out perform the XP-90 and XP-120 if we are to believe the ratings chart
at overclockers.com. I have the XP-90C. Chart...Text...This is a P4 rating chart but all of these do fit AMD.

If you have the room and want a 120 fan on your HS, go with the SI-120 as it does not
have any known board compatability issues as the XP-120 does.
The SI was brought out because the XP would not work on a few boards. With the SI you
have a HS for any future rig up-grade.

Actually:

SI-120 is designed to fit all AMD socket 754/939/940 motherboards (*Gigabyte K8 motherboards see below). The only motherboard issue we have found so far is with Chaintech VNF4 Ultra s939 as one of the capacitors gets in the way of the wire clip to lock into the RM.

I'd choose the XP-120 because of the larger fan (= less noise) and more heatpipes. I also remember reading something about copper making very little difference in heatpipe coolers, which makes sense if you consider that the heat is transferred to the easy-to-cool fins through a different medium.

At best they are even... but the SI-120 will take a very very very slow and quiet 120mm fan. At this point I wish I'd gotten that, instead of my XP-90. If it was up to me, all of my fans would be 120mm.

Well, it turns out that a local store has the Scythe Ninja for $38, so now I'm considering that one. Wonder how it will fit on an Epox EP-9NPA+Ultra.

I'd pick the xp-90, the $28 aluminum one not the heavy copper thing, and put a 120mm fan on it. Best of both worlds. Mmmm, 22*c idle temps are great.

I sure would like to see a pic of a XP-90 with a 120 on it.

All the 92 to 120 addapters I've seen use mounting holes on the inside.
They don't have ears on them for the 92 mounting. Bad idea at best.

A good 92x38 fan can give 40cfm of air quietly and put-out 57cfm if needed
w/o too much noise. Delta Triple Blade 92x38 will.
The XP-90 does not need over 50cfm.

I heard of this a while ago...Als I emember sending thermaright amail n abut a 120 on XP90c thier reply was short and sweet ..Yes it is possible""

These are exerpts from a current discussion @ exteme overclockers:

chrisshort you coudl always put a 120mm fan on it. It only says 92mm fans but both me and costabunny are running 120mm fans and its quite and as good as the tornado i ust to have on it

chrisshort said:
put a 120mm fan on top of it. It fits the clips hold it snug as a bug. I have one running right at this very moment. If i had a camera i would take a picture 😛

* I have bought a Si120 for my new system.

You do realize that the search feature isn't very effective most of the time. And not just on AT forums, it's pretty universal.

As for the OT, I agree about the xp-90c, it's not worth the price, and it's a lot heavier than the others. As for the 3 remaining, get whichever one is the cheapest (xp-90) that will work on your setup. There isn't enough of a performance difference to justify the extra cost.

Most of that is BS. The xp90 does best with around 90-100cfm. Who said anything about adapters?

..."and put a 120mm fan on it." 😀 The XP-90 is set-up for a 92mm fan. A 92x38 is my choice to use.

ThermalRight suggest a 48cfm fan at 30dBA.

If you read the review at overclockers.com they show a 5C gain when going from
<50 to 74dBA:shocked:

I'll just have to live with the XP-90C, "that heavy copper thing" 😀

My aren't we as angry as our Avatar...😉

I had the xp-90 before I wonder if they've done an upgrade on the retention clips. That was the worst part of the XP-90/120 series were those silly retention clips with all the bass in my games I play almost knocked my xp-90 right off the hinges :/

Looked at the website looks like they did do an upgrade before on one side of the retention bracket there were gaps so the hs would just be hanging by a thread it was the biggest head ache I've ever encountered with a hs

Do you have any benchmarks to show this? Just wondering, because even in my experience in testing temps, anything over 50 cfm is pointless. From 79 cfm to 50 cfm, there was no change in temperature, and from 50 cfm to 40 cfm, there was a change of 3 degrees.

Granted, this was on Xeon processors with a pair of Thermalright SI-9XV.

The xp-90 is set up to do 120mm fans as well, it might as well be since all you have to do is use a 120mm fan with no modificatios whatsoever? Why wouldn't you use a 120mm when when it actively cools your ram, very well might I add, and lowers the chipset and PWMIC temps as well. It pretty much cools the entire mobo since it overhangs the heatsink by mor ethan .5" on all sides.

I also didn't know that getting a louder fan gets you a 5*c temp drop. Any links to that 79dba fan?

I do not know about your Epox EP-9NPA+Ultra, but DFI says that the XP-90c is too heavy for its boards. I would go with the XP/SI-120 or Scythe Ninja.
