Thermalright XP-120 or Scythe Ninja

I am trying to decide between the two heatsinks. If you guys had to decide which would you choose?

I am going to be installing it on a Asus A8N Premium SLI motherboard, and a AMD64 3000+

Seen the review @ SPCR on the Ninja? Perfect for your P180 according to them. I have the xp120 and absolutely love it though. A 22dba fan in push keeps my oc'd 3500+ very cool not to mention mosfets and RAM.

Exactly what I was going to say. The Scythe Ninja lines up almost perfectly with the exhaust fans in the back and top, so you really don't even NEED a fan on the heatsink itself. Of course, if you put one, you'll double your efficiency.

Scythe Ninja

Yes I actually have read the review. And the reason I am going to upgrade to one of these two is for the added silence. My current motherboard (MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum) wouldn't allow me to fit any 120mm heatsinks. But now that I am upgrading to the Asus A8N Premium, I most definately want to move to a quieter heatsink. I like both actually, and it's really hard to decide, lol. I guess probably going with whichever is cheapest wouldn't be a bad choice?

That is an excellent point you have... hmm, although it depends on the layout of the motherboard to see if it lines up with the case fans or not. I need to look into this now. 🙂

Here's a picture. Looks like the CPU will line up perfectly with the top fan. If you put a fan on the right side of the heatsink, you'll get air blowing out through the back of the case as well.

Double efficiency w00t! 😀

One thing to look at....w/ the Ninja you will not have any air blowing down onto that area of the mobo (cooling mosfets, RAM, possibly NB etc..) if that makes a difference to ya. I really like TR's products so I guess you could say I am a "TR fanboy." ( I voted xp120 lol)
That Ninja sure does look tempting though in "passive" mode. I'd be very interested in your temp results if you go Ninja. Seems like in passive mode, your 2 120mm's (rear and top) might have to spin faster to move more air across the Ninja, hence more dba's? hmmm... G-Luck... you CANNOT go wrong with either IMO.

Agreed. 😛

i plan to put 120mm x 38 in back and top when i get the ninja, i think that would be perfect. since the 120 x 25 leave a bit of room still.

I had the 120x38 installed in the rear exhaust on my P180 for about 2 weeks. It's really loud, I would not recommend a 120x38mm fan. The performance difference was either none or very minimal. I rather have my low speed 120x25mm fans installed.

Njoy it and post your findings. 🙂

I will be sure to post my results, and some pictures when it arrives. I can't wait for my new lil setup. I am getting a 7800GTX also, with the Asus A8N Premium SLI, and now the Scythe Ninja.

I wish I had money for a better PSU, but this will have to do for now, till I can get a Seasonic S12 600w in the future.

Yes even on low it is loud, because I had it attached to my fan controller, so I was always adjusting it depending on my tasks. It's the bearings in the fan that make it loud. It has this annoying hum.

LOL, you getting a Ninja too? It seems to becoming popular now. I think I'll go for it.

Wow, I must sadly say that I'm envious of your rig. The S12 will complete that aircooled, "best wirejob I ever seen" pc.

i actually been holding out for it for awhile, but just bought the zalman last week, was previously running stock amd heatsink. since the ninja was sold out for a bit. my local place directron.com gets it on aug 20, so i might exhange my zalman 7700 for it.

Haha thanks... Well I guess the challenge will be when I get the S12 since the cables are much shorter than on my Coolermaster. I'm going to have to see if I can show everyone that I can still manage it even with the shorter cables. 🙂

But yea I will definately be getting an S12 because I am going to have a SLI setup in the future, and this 450W is not going to cut it for sure. It doesn't even have a PCI Express connector, and I'm going to need two 😛
