I was thinking about picking up a vf700-cu but since I have the space, need the better cooling and am not planning on going SLI, I might pick one of these up instead.

I don't think the results are right on that one. No way an Silencer can beat the VF700. Maby then only had it on 5v.

According to Steve's previous article on the Zal, the results haven't changed for the Zalman. If the Silencer is exhausting the hot air out of the chassis and the Zalman isn't, It doesn't seem to hard to believe that the Silencer will have a lower overall tempeture during extensive activity.

EDIT: Previous V-1 Ultra thread

Looks like a great VGA heatsink, would love to see some other reviews considering noise.

"The noise level quoted by Thermalright is 31 dBA. However, I believe the fan to be almost silent and I do not imagine it would be noticeable once in a case."

Could be very different results for different people.

As far as the silencer/vf700 results, in all reviews you'll see the silencer series hitting almost exactly the same temperatures at load across the board, but the vf700 having huge swings in temp results. It's all based on the case's air cooling...if you aren't able to maintain a low case temp with proper airflow, the Zalman's going to choke in every case (pun not intended). It's fan is just too small to create sufficient airflow for itself if the case is already clogged with hot air. This new thermalright, using an 80mm fan, will take care of that but at the expense of being louder.

Of course, this isn't the first heatpipe/fan combo for a VGA, and for $50 and ~31dba I'll stick with my Zalman until I get a hotter video card.

So do you think having 2x120mm fans 2x90mm fans and a 120mm PSU Fan would be considered to "have enough airflow"?

enough airflow would basically mean you have a fan right on top of the video card, sucking air out of the case.

personally, i'd prefer the Silencer because it looks cooler and has DHES but much of this depends on the overall cooling of the case.

uh, yeah, if you consider a Hawker Harrier to have "average fans."
