Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme AM2 bolt mounting kit?

Hello,

I have a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme CPU cooler that I want to take from my other Q6600 rig and plug into my ASUS M4A89TD AM3 motherboard with a AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition.

I need to buy a bolt through kit so it fits the AM3 motherboard,

Thing is that this kit is like $18+ shipping.

However, this below kit looks like it might work also? This one is $11+ shipping.

Has anyone tried these? Which one should I get? Is it really worth the extra $7 for the fancy one? Not sure why that one lets you increase the pressure. That seems like a good way to crack the cpu?

Or should I just take the $20 bucks and get a different heatsink?

The normal one should be fine. I'm using an HR-02 which came with the pressure mounting system. Haven't touched it since install.

What's your budget for a cooler?

You can pick up the CM EVO for $25 AR

What's your motherboard socket for the new CPU? Is it AM3 or AM3+? I think the EVO might only be compatible with AM3+. The CM 212 Plus is compatible with AM2/AM3, but it costs a little more right now, ~$30

Edit: Something to note, Noctua's HSFs are kind of pricey, but in the past (LGA775->1156/1155/1150, I believe) they've provided free mounting kits for people who buy their HSFs and upgrade to new sockets. It might be worth considering as an investment that will last you another socket if you're not the kind of person who feels the itch to upgrade CPU coolers regularly.

I'm sorry I don't understand your response. Are you saying the $11 it will take to upgrade my Thermalright 120 Ultra Extreme with the bolt through kit to my AM3 motherboard will do better than a new $35 heatsink and cooler today?

I know my Thermalright was one of the best, but that was like 7 or 8 years ago.

I can't seem to find anyone comparing this heatsink to the new ones on the market.

No, I'm saying Hyper 212 is a lesser cooler than TRUE 120. You already said you'd rather buy a new cooler than a new bracket.

Assuming TRUE 120 = Thermalright 120 Ultra Extreme I think Ill shell out the 11 bucks if its a better cooler than the $35 cooler.

Best bang for the buck I guess?

Yes, TRUE = ThermalRight Ultra Extreme.

What you could do is get the AMD version from Amazon, then sell the Intel version which should get you something like $20 at least. That way you don't have a now useless extra mounting kit. If you don't mind about that just get the normal $11 mounting kit. A better cooler than the TRUE is going to cost at least $50.

I could do that. I don't feel like selling a heatsink though. I guess Ill just get the bracket. I wish it wasnt 11 bucks though. :/ Id think 5 bucks would be fair for what it is....
