Thermalright ultima 90 question

Is the TR U-90 easy enough to install or is it one of those "push until you can't feel your thumb" monstrosities that the older TR models were?

If it is a difficult install can someone recommend an easier one that still cools well? Also let me know if I need to lap either model if I buy one. Thank you for any advice.

Push? You can use a screwdriver to tighten the bolts. Just tighten it until it stops as they are spring loaded.

I had no issues installing this into my board just a week ago. They aren't like the older clip style heatsinks where you had to push the clips into thhe slots.

If thats the case you're gonna love the Ultima 90 even if you don't lap it (I didn't, the ridges on the base doesn't worry me).

i got mine from frozen CPU i think, installing the actual heat sink is easy, putting the mobo plate on is another story, hope you have 3 hands or a buddy

Can you elaborate on this a bit? Would having a bolt-thru kit alleviate this?

yeah.. it's a PITA to install, it's like you need a third hand...

the mounting posts attach to backplate with little rubber washers and they don't stay in place too good. so you have to get hold the backplate to mobo while your hold the mounting brackets on the other side and try to get screw in before one of them falls out of place...

fun-fun

Hmm, well thanks for explaining. I might be looking for a new HSF then. I am not too dexterous with my hands so this is probably not the best choice for me.

gah i just spent 40 min lapping one for a friend. Im selling the one i have. But, the base isnt super flat. It curves upwards on 2 oposite corners. So you might want to lap it.

TR is starting to get a thumbs down from me in QoC.

Its not as bad as the TRUE. But its still something id recomend lapping. Lemme see if i can take some pics and show you guys what i mean.

You rekon? The rubber washers held the pillars in place perfectly for me. Didn't have any problems with having to hold the backplate onto the motherboard either. Nor did I need a third hand.

What I did was place the backplate on the floor and aligned the pillars with the holes on the motherboard and placed the motherboard on top which held the backplate in plate. Then I just had to screw in the mounting brackets in. I don't even need to remove the motherboard out of my P180 whenever I feel like changing the direction of the heatsink once the backplate is on.

I don't think dexterity should be an issue. You just need to plan the easiest method of doing things I suppose and whenever screwing things on just remember longer screw drivers gives alot of leverage so never over tighten. Stop turning once the screw stops turning.

well after you install it and uninstall it a few times the washers become stretched and loose.. mine fall out easily now

then again I guess others don't change coolers as much as I do so it might not be that big of a deal..

overall though the 90 is a great small cpu cooler

and yes all you have to do is lie mobo on floor or wherever to make the installation much easier

I suppose you could call heatsinks that uses the LGA775 push-pin mounting system the easiest to install such as the scythe ninja which is supposed to perform well under low airflow. You will need to remove your motherboard for installing and make sure the pin go all the way through. It has been said that these push pin arent as effective as bolt on though.

With the Ultima 90 you only need the bolt-thru kit on AMD boards, it has socket 775 in the box. And it is not that hard to get the back plate on.
