Well I am getting my first ocing rig, I am new to this thing, but I am not sure what cooler to get with an amd 3200+ I am thinking a Thermalright SLK-900-U cause I can put my own case fan on it, but it does seem to cost a bundle...any suggestions?

The SLK is a great investment if you're overclocking... However, i suggest you get another CPU because chances of overclocking that 3200+ are slim...

Get a 1700+ or a Barton 2500+

On the other hand, my Vantec AeroFlow keeps my 1700+ (1.4ghz @ 2.4ghz ) @ a cool 45c loaded...

I would recommend the slk-900u over any heatsink. It keeps my computer super cool and the only fan in my case is the one on the heatsink. 115 F full load on a 500mhz overclock isnt bad. The fan on my slk-900u is the thermal take smart case fan, the first one. Great combo.

I run about 113 F on a 1ghz overclock with my AeroFlow... Only set me back about $25...

Also, make sure your motherboard will support the slk-900(u) as there are MANY boards that have problems with the size of this beast.

Well first of all, if you're going to worry about "costing a bundle" you shouldn't have or should not get the 3200+, a 2500+ ($83.00 + free shipping at Newegg.com) will overclock to close to that speed. But since everyone in front of me just said that, I'll say the benefits of an expensive HSF solution like that SLK-900u. I have an 800u, they're about the same. The 800u is a very solid block of copper with a very smooth finish. The retention solutions that it comes with is also very nice. I removed my P4 retention block and screwed it into the four mounting holes and it is completely stable. For the Athlons, your board might have the four holes to screw the heatsink in. This heat sink coupled with correctly applied thermal grease will yield about 4-5C difference in the stock cooling solution. Over where I live (desert), it wisks away heat very well. If it's colder in your area, you might not see a huge difference like 4-5C drop because it is already bloody cold there (stupid Alaskans, jk I wub you). Anyway, I changed over from a AX-478 (AX-7 for Athlons), and I notice that you can feel the 20 dollar difference when you hold it in your hand, the 800/900u is solid, the 900u can support up to 92mm fans and copper does in fact transfer heat better. But remember, getting a cheaper solution like SK-7 will probably not hurt you too much. Anyway, my 800u is paired with a Thermal Take Smart Fan II, this one has bright lights hehe. Though I have yet found a clever place to put the fan controller.

The Swiftech MCX462+ is better then any SLK heatsink, including the SLK-900U. Go read up on your reviews:D

I'm running a retail fan from a 1.4 Tbird on my 1700+ Tbred A. Temps are like 30-40 idle. Dunno about full load though.
