Yes, it's necessary. Thermal tape/paste provides a thermal connection b/t the cpu and the heatsink. Without it, contact would be minimal at best.

Did you buy an OEM CPU? If so, it comes with a HSF that most prolly has a piece of thermal tape already applied.

If not, go to RadioSmack. They have tube of cheap thermal paste for about $1.00. You can scrounge up a dollar, or charge another 1800XP on your credit card. Your choice.

Yes you need some kind of thermal transfer median, either a pad or paste/grease. Is your cpu retail?
The problem is that when you dont have anything between the two then there are gaps between the metal of your heatsink and the core. The gaps might not be apparent but they are there. The paste or pads form into these gaps and makes it possible for as much surface area to transmit the heat from your cpu to your hs, with out it the surface area can be limited by a large factor. And trust me you don't want air as your median between the two.

OEMs will not have them on there, only retails that I have seen has the hs and thermal pad on it. That is one of the main differences between retail and oem, the other being warrenty.

PM me with your snail mail address and I'll mail you some. It won't be instant gratification, but it's better than a fried CPU.

The 1800= ships with a piece of thermal tape attached to it so you should be fine for now. I couldn't find the arctic tube when I installed mine, so I went with the tape until I bought some more, and it worked fine. I think the CPU was about 45 idles and in the upper fifties on full load. Not the coolest unit around, but it nothing bad should come of it. Paste is definately a better longterm solution and you might want to switch at some point in the near future.

No offence, but I find it strange that you have the money for an XP 1800+, but none for some thermal paste...
