I have a 1.4 Ghz Athlon running on the Asus A7M266 board witht the Thermal Right SK-6 heatsink. It seems to me that it should be running a lot cooler than it does. (at least all the reviews of this heat sink say it should run cooler) My CPU usually runs around 47 Celcius (116 F). My AMD 761 chipset usually runs around 37 C (98 F). What does your's run at and do you think something is wrong with mine or what can I do to make it run cooler?

*NOTE: I replaced the Delta fan b/c it was too loud. I now have a Thermal Take fan that runs at about 4,900 RPMs.

The fan does make a difference. How much cfm is that fan?? I 'm running mine with a 30cfm Delta on my XP 1800 @1.62 GHz, on an ASUS A7V266E. Under load it's about 47.
It's also a hot topic that ASUS reports their temps higher than other other mobo manufacturers. Some say it's actually more accurate. Not sure myself. But, 47 isn't something to get too worried about. Is that under load???

Here's a nice example of the asus compensation:

VoidYourWarranty Diode Tests.

The WPCredit/Idle tweak should drop the cpu temp, backside measurement or not, to near ambient system temp. As you can see on the first graph on this page, its running roughly ~10C over ambient case temp.

So, however, asus does their compensation, be it a standard + compensation or a more complex one, at least at idle, there's at least 10C worth of compensation.

This compensation certainly applies later on, too. Asus simply compensates their readings more than other mb manufacturers. Is this more accurate? Not really, since socket-thermistor's aren't accurate. However, it does help give a better representation of DIE temp. As you can see, the A7V133 with its compensation isn't too far from actual die temp wtih the Glaciator II. Of course, wtih a different heatsink, this could be different.

The Thermal Take fan is 36 CFM. So it should be fine. What do you think about getting it to run cooler?

Sorry, I also forgot to ask whether the direction of the air flow from the fan matters? I have it set up so the CPU fan is blowing air towards the heatsink, rather than sucking air away from it. Is one way better than the other with the SK-6?

From my experiences, it is better with the fan blowing on the heatsink.

The SK6 is designed for the fan to blow "ON" to the HS. Your temps are normal/average. I've got my 1.4 O/C'd to 1.59 (10x159) and I'm using a Delta 30.5 cfm, 39.5 dba, 5500 rpm fan. My temps under full load never exceed 44c and now in the winter, they never get above 38c.

Actually, I was planning o do this same thing, which means fan from Tt + coppper sk-6........
Good idea
But how much louder would be a Glaciator II?

bullion416,

I'm using the SK6 on my XP 1600... temps around 38-42C. I did the typical mount an 80mm fan diagonally across the top. no probs..

how good is the air flow over all through your whole system? Also what the temperature in your room. I find that I have alot more heating problems in the summer (my room is like 8C hotter in the summer time compared to winter).
