I have a celeron 566 with hsf, and was wondering if thermal paste is sold at any retail stores. Id rather just go buy it than order off the net and wait for it. What stores might carry ie. Staples, circuit city...

However, keep in mind that the RadioShack stuff isn't all that great. I would recommend that you get Arctic Silver, which is not available in brick and mortar stores.

Does it make that significant of a drop in temp?? Will the HSF itself be fine, or should i get some?
thanks

I think Arctic Silver is overated, I have some white thermal grease before that came w/ my HSF, replaced the videocard and the CPU w/ arctic and the temp remained the same, I'm using one of those Global fan or something. But the point is, they're better than thermal pads.

Even the Radio Shack stuff is far better than nothing....air is a lousy conductor of heat. The RS stuff dries out over time and needs to be checked periodically.

Depending on how well I put it on, the Arctic Silver lowers my temp about 4-5F over the cheap stuff.

The white stuff really does suck. Take off you cpu after a week of overclocking, its bone dry. Artic silver is still there after a week and it DOES drop them temp by 4-5c. Buy it, try it, and then die by it ;-)

Radio Shack grease is fine. I use Artic Silver, but it was $14.00, and I saw no significant drop. NOT TO SAY IT ISN'T GREAT STUFF, but my CPU (OC CuII 600@900) simply doesn't produce a lot of heat even under load. For the best OC, use Artic, For most other jobs, the RS grease is fine.

I have some cheap grease from Onvia.com (about $2 shipped). I also have Artic Silver. For my two computers, the comparison shows that the Artic Silver lowered my temps in one computer by 2F degrees (not celcius) and in the other computer, no change, using CPU Stability Test 6.0 with CPU warming. In sum, for my setups, the Article Silver was not money well spent.

Basic PC specs:

PC 1
Duron 650@900
vcore 1.775
FOP32 cooler

PC 2
Duron 700@1000
vcore 1.70
FOP32 cooler

I checked out the arctic site but do not see any purchasing options there. from where does one obtain this product?

i don't care if RS stuff dries out. it still does it's job. just re-apply it semi-annually to avoid the paste getting too hard and virtually glue the HSF and cpu together.

But better brand white stuff won't dry out quickly. It'll stay mushy for years. the intel OEM white stuff on my pentium 75 is still good.

bwgriff,

You know what? AMD socket A temp measurement's are messed up anyways. It won't register the real mount of cpu temp drop you would get with the current method of temp measurement.

Not only are amd temp results highly compressed, but they are highly inaccurate.

pifft i think you guys just put down the radio shack stuff cuz radio shack is super expensive and people that work there suck, ive been using it on mine for over 14 months and it still looks the same as when i put it on.

MaJik,

If you've had it one for 14months, then you're obviously not using a duron/t-bird. They run at heats that are out of range for radio shack grease. Hence, over time(sometimes a few months, sometimes shorter), radio shack grease tends to dry out when used on amd socket A cpus.

I don't see any problem with RS stuff on a Slot CPU since there is a high contact area which reduces the importance of the paste. However, on a socket CPU where the temps are high and there is only a small contact area, I'd rather go with something that would be more reliable and has better consistency than the RS stuff.

i popped off the hs/fan that was on my old celery, and the paste was all caked and dried. it had only been running for about eight months. may be a long time, but the point is it dries.
