thermal paste

im a first time builder and i've read different opions on this

i am building using a amd 64 3000 skt 939 chip retail, and the IT guy at work told me that I do not need to buy thermal paste?

BUt I thought that was necessary???

He said that since I'm buying the retail version, that it will come with it's own paste??? huh?

and then some places online say that I must use AS5?

help for newbie pc builder.

yes AS5 is a really good thermal paste... i got arround 7 degree difference

If you are not overclocking the Pad on the Heatsink should work.

They was a thread about AS and AMD not having it as an "appoved" thremal paste.

you can find a list of AMD's approved thermal conducters on their web site. However if you are buying a retail CPU it will come with it, and the retail should be fine, unless you plan to OC your cpu (which voids the warranty)

well, i do not plan to overclock, so I believe that there is no need to buy AS5 according to what you guys have told me.

OCZ thermal compound is slightly better.

The stock pad actually works quite well. You'll have no need for AS unless you need to remove the HSF after initial installation for some reason.

It seems to work great. I'm getting low scores on 3dMark 03 though, so I'm not exactly sure what's going on. I did play BF1942 DC maxed out at 1600X1200 with zero slowdown. I haven't tried HL2/CS yet.

I don't think any thermal paste compares to lapping the hsf. Lapping the hsf doesn't void warranty. If you must use paste, at least read the directions carefully (the paste should be barely noticeable. I hate seeing messes left behind by n00bs.

how come AS5 isn't "amd approved"? any reason not to use AS5?

AMD doesn't like you to use metallic based thermal compounds. They will actually void your warranty on the socket A processors for using it. Socket A's have "exposed electronics on top that can be damages by using metalic based thermal pastes". They do NOT void you warranty on AMD 64/Opteron processors however, because they have the large heat spreader on top, hence no exposed electronics. If you are careful, AS5 is an excellent choice.

AMD approves mainly phase-change pads for socket A processors and greases for the A64 processors.
