Thermal Paste & Pentium 4?

Need your expertise............

I have been running this PC for almost 2-3 weeks and never had any problem, my question is, do I need to apply Thermal Paste on this CPU? When I bought my P4 2.4Ghz 533 (Box or Retail) it has this black (thing) attached to the fan (came with CPU) assumed don't need paste. Should I do it or leave it as is no thermal paste?

Thank you.

That black thing on the bottom of the HSF is the thermal pad, and is intended to be used instead of thermal paste. Unfortunately, its not as efficient as the thermal paste, but if you aren't going to overclock it, it should be fine.

If you decide you do want to overclock, you probably need a better fan. Here are the instructions for applying Artic Silver. Artic Silver III is the best paste on the market at the moment.

My 1.8A is running at 2.7GHz using the stock fan 😀 My temps are 53-54C under load, which isn't great, but its certainly not gonna hurt the chip and its 100% stable (stopped prime95 after 13 hours with no errors).

Thanks all.........

Idle temp is 40.5 C/104.9 F. Lets see what happens when playing UT, JEDI KNIGHT2,UT2003 etc.... I don't really overclock, it already makes me dizzy playing games more than 30min.....

Guys....my P4 2.4gig not overclocked Idles at 41C....I'm using the Volcano 7+ all copper hsf....is this normal temperature? Seems really high to me....insites plz?

41 degrees idle is fine for a 2.4 piv. I have a 1.6 piv (non northwood) and it idles at 42 degrees in the winter and about 45 degrees in the summer. At load it can get as high as 54 degrees. I was also concerned and looked on intels website (it was a while ago so I cannot provide the link). Near as I can tell the 2.4 max temp is 70 degrees and the 1.6 is 75. Also people have posted about this before and the concensus was that these temperatures are fine.

that's perfectly fine. these suckers put out way more heat than the P3's of days past. 🙂

my 1.6A @ 2.14ghz idles at 32C, and is 44C at full load. retail HS, thermal pad.

Also keep in mind guys that the temperature reading from the motherboards tend to differ by a few degrees from company to company.
