Thermal paste go bad?

I usually change the termal paste on my CPU every 6 months & blow ever thing out with a can of air.

Anyways i've let things slide for about a year
No upgrades in 1.5 years:Q

Lately I've noticed my CPU temps have been getting really high lately with idle temps in the high 40s to low 50s with load temps well into the 50s.
Anyways had 3 hard locks in the last 2 days which aint normal since i run my system for weeks 24/7 without reboots or crashes.

So after the second crash I went to apply some termal paste and it seems way thicker then i remember almost as if its sorta hardened over the last year. I still applied some
and havnt really noticed a change in temp.

Can this stuff go bad, i just have the tubed stuff, its 3 years old this summer.

Ohh by the way i run a non-overclocked Thunderbird 800 i'm running.
