Thermal Pad or Paste?

I know this video seems a mite on the beginner side, but I couldn't find the white paper which mentioned it, and I found this while I was looking for it.
AMD video on thermal pad or grease

I was just wondering what you think of this, as so many of you recommend thermal grease, that I was surprised to see this.
 
If you are running a system at stock specs. and you are a newb use the pad.

If you want to step up the proc speeds or voltage or want a cooler cpu use the grease.
 
This is just wondering what you thought about amd's opinion on grease - mainly just surprised, and wanted a second opinion.I have no plans on changing my current setup. Any other ideas?
