Thermal pad on a Global Win FLOP 38

My FLOP 38 just arrived and it has a thermal pad already applied. Should I use that or should I use the artic silver that I also purchased. Also what is the best way to attach the hsf with the least risk of damage to the cpu.

Will rubbing alcohol take it off or do I need to use something mroe aggressive.

Leave the pad alone. It will perform within a couple of degrees of AS and it will cushion your core to prevent cracking which AS will not. The clip on the FOP is tight, keep pressure on the hsf to keep it flat when fastening the clips.

I dont think using rubbing alcohol will work very good. I have heard of using WD-40? But never tried myself. I used some stuff called &quot;Goof Off&quot; takes the pad right off and SUPER easy. Didnt even need a knife! Wipe on Wipe off. The wife bought it at a local paint store.

i would use the arctic silver with a copper shim so it wont brak you chip.
that pad probably sucks. dont use it

The pad on the FOP38 is pretty fantastic. At least, according to my experience.

46 degrees at 950Mhz and 1.8V is pretty good!

In comparision, when using normal grease on a Duron 700mhz at 900Mhz @ 1.55V i get 52 degrees.

How many posts will there be from IDIOTS who say, 'The Pad sucks use a copper shim'. Copper shims are USELESS, get it. They create more problems than solutions.

AMD has spent millions of dollars to produce a great CPU and you think that the only recommend PCTC pads because they suck !!. Get Real. Arctic Silver is the ONLY thermal compound that can be assured to handle the high heat and high clip pressure of Socket A. Just about every other thermal grease will squeeze out or dry out.

is it true that the thermal pad on most heatsinks do a better job of insulating the heatsink rather than transfering heat? if so, i guess it would be better to take the pad off and just use the Arctic Silver.

Yes, for most heatsinks, the thermal pad is very much junk.

for AMD approved heatsinks with PCTC, the stuff does perform well for a pad, and you don't run the risk of drying out(like with a lot of other greases)

Don't use both. The pad if fine, but if you still want to remove it, then use the AS.

it's best if the AS squeezes out. it's only there to fill in the voids, not to cushion the core.

Blast Anandtech I can't seem to stay logged on.
Anyway as soon as I received mine I scraped off the pad with my finger nails and used nail polish to clean it up and some alcohol. Then I bent the clip a little bit so as not to put too much pressure on the Duron when installing. Applied arctic silver and away we go.....
Temps are 35/42
