Thermal grease

I just ran out of the stuff that came with my heatsink and I need some thermal grease. Are specific types better than others and how much do you need?

Personal preference: Arctic Silver 5 because I have it and seems to work better than the white stuff that some heatsink manufacturers tend to give you (although that has drastically changed, with more companies offering silver based thermal paste).

If you're applying AS5, just a drop in the middle would do. Never apply over the whole CPU.

3.5 g will be enough for numerous applications. I have applied my AS5 on three computers and it still hasn't run out yet.

Get either Arctic Silver 5 or the new Shin Etsu stuff that is being distributed under the CoolerMaster brand (at least that's the only place I've seen it in reasonable quantities) - it applies much easier than the earlier Shin Etsu stuff (which had the consistency of a dry modeling clay) and doesn't settle out like the AS5 will in storage (their claim to the contrary not withstanding). And of course it functions just as well as AS5 and is 100% non-conductive (feel free to be messy 😉 ).
. The Shin Etsu is more expensive but I think it is worth it as I don't need to use my goop very often so I always have had to re-suspend my AS... I've seen it at SVC.com (part no. PTK-002) and they'll ship by FCM uninsured (if you but ask) to save on shipping. CM also has this Nano Fusion stuff - but it's muy expensivo and I haven't heard much else about it. I found the PTK-002 cheaper at Shentec but IDK about shipping and I'd have to pay NYST.

I got that stuff that claims they are better than AS 5 and were giving it away free plus shipping. Couldn't argue there.

Never mind. I have some of that sitting here that I haven't tried yet. I got mine while it was free postage too... 😀
