Thermal grease on a Duron?

Waiting on a motherboard to put together a Duron system. On the chip, it has four pads on each corner. Would it make a difference to put a dab of thermal grease on the pads?...

it'd be best to remove the pads, lap the heatsink flat and clean of any sticky stuff, and then put on thermal grease. But I agree, DON'T put the greast ONTO the pad. Use one, or the other, not both. But grease is better.

Hey all, I believe CayJon is refering to the four "shims" stuck on the corners of the Duron and Tbird to help keep the heatsink centered....they are rubber, and they are nowhere near the die, thermal grease there won't be of any help. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies...I wasn't shure if the shims were a metal type or not. If I take off the shims, the heatsink will sit right on top of the die, and not flat. I'm thinking, when its clipped down, all the pressure is on the die, possibly damaging it.?

I didn't realize that was what you were talking about....you're right. You shouldn't remove them, because as long as the CPU die is still in good contact with the heatsink (the rubber "shims" keep it balanced I assume) then that'd be best. Fish54 had it right Mea Culpa

I've started seeing people making copper plates that have a cutout for the core. They are removing the little pad doohickies, then laying this copper slug down in between to balance out the height difference, then using grease on the whole shebang. Darned if I know what'll work, I'm not getting a Duron till it's a done deal on the overclocking.

It is a done deal havent you read toms article that he put up last week. It just takes a little work but it works on any board, you have to change the little tiny settings on the die. I have a duron 700 just waiting on my asus a7v which i should be getting on thursday. I hope.

I had the same question assembling mine. I eventually decided to lay off the grease, since (A) those rubber pads were there for a reason and (B) slapping the heatsink down (or, even better, smearing thermal grease) on those bridges did not seem like a great idea.
A done deal is when practical success is reported, not theoretical possibility. Good luck burning your bridges.
