Where's the picture? The purplish/shiny part = cpu core/die = A little retangular (or square depending on the model) metallic box right in the middle of the cpu? If I'm guessing right, it sounds like you just have some paste on the top sides of a cpu. Just use rubbing alcohol & a Q-tip to clean it off. Unless you're using a conductive grease, it should be ok.

but i know waht u mean

its on the raised part (which is core/die)
if a bit got on the 'wafer' (i have no idea what its "technically" called either...substrate?)anywyas, just use a cotton swab to clean it IF its on a brige or something electrical....if its just on the wafer part, but not touching anything, its ok

even depending on the thermal paste, it would be ok to use it even if it got on anything electrical
