Thermal Compound Question????

Generic Silicone Paste

I took off the thermal pad off my heat sink and am now ready to add silicon paste to my athlon. I have read from many sites that I only want a paper thin layer. My question is, wouldn't I have to put a lot more paste than that to make up for the thickness of the removed thermal pad? Also, can I get away with using the cheap silicone paste if I do not intend on overclocking.

You don't need extra paste to make up for the pad, the tension of the clip will overcome the little foam pads and you will have good contact.
The cheap paste will work OK, but the general opinion is that it will dry out ater a while, which may affect heat transfer.
